What do they even do with Appel? He's been injured, he's been given more rest, less rest. Nothing works. Needs an offseason to work on his stuff or something.

Thank you Houston for drafting Appel. Cubs are more than happy settling for Bryant.

Seriously, the Cubs have been there with Kerry Wood and Prior. Got a little more mileage before injuries but thats always the risk with pitching.

Alcantara should still a prospect despite being called up. 9/23 .391 with a solid glove. Playing 2B and CF.

DJ Peterson is looking good so far. He may be the answer to a RH power bat for the Mariners.

DJ Peterson has now played 135 MiLB games.
.313/.370/.578/.948, 34HR, 170H, 38 2B, 2 3B, 95R, 127RBI, 7/9SB, 47BB, 117K.

Edit: This is from the @milbmariners twitter.

So interesting situation forming between Aiken and the Astros.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/c...y-aiken-071414

TL;DR - Aiken's MRI revealed potentially a UCL issue. This is what the Astros claim. Aiken and his agent claim nothing different, and site many arm specialists have seen Aiken and said nothing is wrong.

What the agent is saying the Astros are doing is making Aiken take a lower deal than first intended, so they can sign Nix (who they gave a formal offer and the rescinded it) and Mac Marshall. Aiken and his agent are standing firm.

Now the interesting part. Astros offered Aiken the minimum amount (a little over 3M) to sign a deal. They needed to do that so they can ensure that they get a comp pick next year should Aiken not sign. The Agent is speculating they are just trying to save their own *****.

Jim Callis speculated if Aiken files a grievance, he may be awarded free agency and the Astros may have their pick taken away.

^That story is all kinds of messed up and I'm not even sure who to believe. I wouldn't be shocked if the Astros are trying to go cheap, but as others have noted, would they take it this far? Plus, it's not like their Drs are some scrubs (though I'm not sure which ones are involved) and MLB seems to be on Houston's side thus far.

I remember draft night when Harold Reynolds, displaying his illustrious knowledge, claimed Appel could pitch in the bigs within a month or two of that draft.

Not a good last few weeks for the Astros with the Correa injury added on and the computer leak scandal.

Dear White Sox,

Don't run Carlos Rodon through the gauntlet.

Sincerely,
People who like Rodon and have seen Appel collapse

So where do the Astros go from here? Don't sign Aiken and are stuck with Appel. Yikes.

I live out here in Lancaster and get to hear alot about Appel and things don't sound too promising for him, Correa on the other hand is going to be a monster.

Probably end up with picks #1 and #2. Draft Mike Cameron's son and college pitcher Matuella. Not a bad consolation price.

The Astros aren't a guarantee to get the #1 pick. The Cubs need to lose for Daz.

I think it's down to Cubs, Rockies and Astros. Then again Rangers have been pretty bad but kinda expect them to win few. Philly somehow tends to stay mediocre.

They entered the year with the 3rd highest payroll in baseball, as well.

My bad, I should have said Philly. I was commentating on the part about 'staying mediocre'.

The only thing worse than not winning is spending a lot of money and not winning.

Some awesome research here on bust rates of minor leaguers relative to their ranking and position

For top 10 hitters, I'd probably rank their likelihood of being the 1 bust in this order:
Gallo
Baez
Sano
Seager
Lindor
Swihart
Russell
Correa
Buxton
Bryant

Murray, where are Polanco and Pedersen?

Agree on Gallo. Clear cut #1.
