I never like the mega long-term deals, but it's the only way to lock your best players up with the way free agency works. Taking the money we would pay Nylander or Theodore and investing it in Backstrom. Dollar value is good for arguably one of the top 10 players in the league right now. Almost like GMGM took a page out of Ken Holland's book.

I'm just Pissed Shero couldn't do this with any of the young penguins. Pretty discouraging.

That is one hell of a deal, if the cap rises only to say 64M within the next five years it will be absolutely unbelievable.

Dammit what a deal.

Beauty deal for the Caps. He'll be what 33 at the end of that contract? Very team-friendly signing there.

Wow, I smell discount.

Does this mean that they will try to keep Semin?

Several Caps players have commented about keeping the team together over the past year. I expect that they know the salary cap limits what they can make and they would contribute income to the group effort.

They are a very tight group.

I dont think Backstrom's deal should be compared to EStaal. Compare it to the Sedins, Toews and Kane and Malkin.

I just don't know about Semin. Everything I've seen suggests he's looking for a mega contract, and I don't see the Caps giving it to him with (I think) $16.2m locked up in two players. And that's before we talk about Mike Green, who will get more money from someone in a few years when his contract expires.

It's just hard to see how Semin would fit unless he takes a team-friendly contract, and I haven't seen any indications he would be willing to do so.

DD, I think people are jumping to the wrong conclusion. I think McPhee was offering a 4 year deal or something like that. Semin likely knew Backstrom's deal was in the 10 year range and Ovechkin's 10+. I think Semin wanted more term, not more salary.
I think the one year extension was to give Semin a chance to have a 80 game, healthy season.

I dont think Semin is any different than Ovechkin and Backstrom and Laich and Green that want to play together for the long term.

Wow. Just wow. I think GMGM earned himself a new contract after pulling off this deal. Backstrom, at 23, is already worth over 6.7M and will only get beter. Mind bogglingly good.

Having Backstrom-Ovechkin locked up for the next near-decade is about as solid a forward core as you can have.

Dude, I would love for this to be true. But I have a feeling, including from a couple of interview fragments, that Semin is content to completely hand over all affairs to his agent, who is Mark F'ing Gandler. I don't trust Gandler for a second to do anything but milk the situation for all its worth.

this is bad news for the rest of the eastern conference. the ovie and backstrom pairing is probably just as lethal offensively as the malkin and crosby pairing (although on different lines), and will cost ~2 mil less per year.

although hopefully it's good news for the flyers when they resign carter and giroux...

I don't get why everybody is screaming about how good of a deal this will be for Washington. Wasn't he under team control for another 3-4 years? I think it's an immediate overpayment for the years he is under team control and ends up being market value for the final 6-7 years.

Not a big fan of signing a guy after a 100 point season in the best offense in the NHL. Backstrom is a special player and will never be a bust on this contract, but this is franchise forward money. Time will tell I suppose. I'll probably get sandblasted for even the notion that may not score 150 points next year with 120 assists, but I need to see it more than once to issue that kind of contract.

Backstrom was eligible for restricted free agency in July if I'm not mistaken. So technically they would've had an upperhand but possibly could've been forced to outbid a team that really wanted him.
