I was just about to post this, saw it via facebook.

From Sabres.com:
Quote:
Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today the Sabres have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with forward Mike Grier, who was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Grier (1/5/1975, 61, 225 lbs.) had 22 points (10+12) in 73 regular season games for Buffalo this season. He also contributed two goals in six playoff games, and was credited with a team-leading 33 hits.

For a guy who's unafraid of walking away from a deteriorating situation, I think this says a lot about his view of the organization's direction.

Chain, wasn't it just yesterday that you were wondering aloud why they hadn't done this yet? You know Darcy doesn't work on Sundays.

Great news. Any guesses on price yet? I'd guess a small raise - maybe $200k-$300k more?

Consider yourselves on notice, Nancy Drew and : At least one of you is now (officially) expendable.

Awesomeness. Letting Grier walk again would've been criminal. The first time was bad enough.

Yeah, I'd guess $1.5. Fair deal for both sides. Put a letter on the guy, FFS.

Yep, this is a positive move -- nice to see them not wait, do something that they can do now. Hopefully he's more than just casually kicking the tires on Tallinder and Lydman to see what they are interested in too.

I also guess 1.5, that's been the number I've estimated for him in doing cap calculations for next season.

This is good and expected news. He played well enough to earn another contract.

One thing to watch for is the term--whether he got a 1 year deal or if he got a 2 year deal (I don't think Regier would offer a 3 year contract). He is 35, so any multi-year contract would be subject to the 35+ clause (the first year of any contract is exempt from that clause). (EDIT--Just saw the 1-year mention in the Tweet)

Hopefully some folks who were panicking that the Sabres weren't doing anything will calm down a little--Regier has always been known to run a tight ship when it comes to information leaking to the press. I suspect he also has approached our other FAs in at least preliminary talks to find out where everyone stands.

I'm surprised he was so eager to return. Anyway, as a Sabres follower by proxy, I hope this is the beginning of a shake up in the right direction in regards to the roster. He was probably one of the best players, IMO, when the rest of the team looked asleep some nights.

Great both that they got it done so quickly AND that it's a 1 year contract. Both sides can re-evaluate after this season, which is certainly in the best interest of each party.

I hope this signals a direction for the front office where they properly prioritize what needs to be done and ACT rather than REACT towards each situation.

Great signing (if at or under 1.5 M). The Sabres need his grit and leadership.

Wootness. Griere is part of what worked last season. I'm glad his opinion of the organization has improved enough to re-re-up.

Ta,

Assuming of course that Vanek has made the permanent switch to RW.

Good move, its a step in the right direction, lets not get too excited until they add a proven top 6 forward somehow.

It might not look like much of a signing to outside observers but having veterans like Mike Grier and Craig Rivet goes a long way towards attracting other guys who just want to win.

Yep. Now that he's in, get them on the phones calling their friends to recruit for the team. Player-to-player contact isn't tampering...
