Gionta is being OVER PAID in Montreal. Good for him, he got the money and he went after it. But he's not worth that much money.
I agree... but if I had to choose between giving Gionta 5M$ and Rolston, I'd give it to a guy who didn't see a minute of 3rd line duties this year and that would be Gionta.
I'm not saying that both contracts are good, just saying that if for the same price... I'd take someone that has heart, goes in front of the net and plays with passion.
But like CWE said, both of them signed in different offseasons.
Word has gotten around the league about how poorly some respected veterans were treated, such as two-time Stanley Cup winner Jay Pandolfo being benched during the playoffs and forced to dress in the practice locker room instead of with his teammates in the main dressing room.

He's worth a lot more than Rolston, who's been a complete bust in New Jersey.

The only thing that's "stupid" is thinking that signing a player one season doesn't have major implications regarding future contracts. Gio even said at the time Rolston was signed that the Devils were "crowded" at his position.
Getting paid 2.5M$ per to watch games from the press box is one sweet ****ing deal if you ask me... no ?!?!?
But he's a "respected veteran", which means he must play every game and get at least 15 minutes of ice time...even if he sucks. You aren't allowed to bench veterans, Chere says so.

God forbid we play younger players with heart and energy who have earned a roster spot.

He's actually "stealing" money from Lou and Mr. Vanderbeek, so he should make as less noise possible and act like a ****ing ghost for the next 14 months... that's if he's still on the team by training camp.

We never waived Pandolfo. And we could have and probabaly sould have. Donald Brashear got waived. Jonathan Cheecho got waived, Brendan Witt got waived, but we're having a bad reputation around the league for not treating people right??
Pat Burns has been getting a paycheck from us for 5 years and we're not loyal? The Flyers fired Roger Nielson and their GM called him, "Goofy" after his cancer diagnosis.
But we're not classy throughout the league? Eat ****.

Contracts aren't signed in a vacuum.
30 goals each season for 3 years leading up to the Devils for Rolston. Gionta struggled to get to 20 for his final 2 years before free agency. Yeah I guess Lou was stupid.
Rolston had the exact same number of goals this season as Gionta did his final season with NJ. 13 less assists is the difference between playing with the likes of Clarkson, McAmmond and Niedermayer vs. Elias.

Hindsight + Armchair GM'ing at it's finest.
Gionta is also getting first line minutes and power play time. He's also playing with Gomez. Without Gomez Gionta kinda sucked. He would have sucked here playing with McAmmond as his center.

I never said we waived Pandolfo. I said that he was stealing money cause he's not even ON THE ICE when his teamates are. He's cashing 2.5M$ per for eating hot-dogs and pizza on the press box... this guy should not be complaining, period !!!

Gionta and Gomez are great together. As much as I've let known that Gio is my favorite player, I agree that he would not fit here. Would he be better than Rolston? Of course. But you can't compare those two seeing how they both hit free agency two different years.
I don't agree that he sucked without Gomez though. 55-60 points is not sucking in my opinion. He was definitely better with Gomez though.

NO. I was directing my diatribe towards Rich Chere.
And if we don't get the proper centers on this team ...
-and-
If we continue to play players out of position...
We will continue to have 30+ goal scorers turn it into barely 20goal scorers.
You think it is a coincidence that Gionta goes from barely crack 20 goal in 80 games with New Jersey to 28 goals in 61 games with Montreal? You think it is he just needs Gomez??? Wingers need decent centers and we don't have any after Zajac.

I don't think this is totally fair.
Brian Gionta last year got 60 points in 1,377 minutes. He was being used at the half boards on the PP so his assists being up and goals being down is not a surprise. He also spent a lot of time on the 2nd PP unit which didn't help his points but was why he had to be on the halfboards instead of the net.
This year Gionta has 46 points in 1266 minutes. If we prorate that to 1,377 minute he has 50 points this year.
So Gionta's goals are up but his assists are down. I think most of this is probably due to the spot he is getting to play on the PP. Gionta was arguably more productive last year with the Devils.
Anyone else read the title of this thread and think this was going to be a praising article of Gio's tendency to get down and dirty in front of the net to score goals? Something we stopped using him for but the Habs have continued to do so?

Assuming 35 year old players are going to continue to produce at their career averages
Replacing home grown players in their prime with overpaid Free Agent has beens
So Rolston has been just as productive as Gio his last 2 seasons, he's just 6 years older and untradable.
Yeah, Lou's a genius. At least the Habs had a plan, unlike Lou who's plans seem to consist of
