Interesting article on NHL.com about first European ref to NHL

link to article about Marcus Vinnerborg

I started a thread on the main NHL board, but it disappeared and now someone else started one (which is good), but then it reappeared; anyway I thought it was worth posting here, too.

I know this may stink for the SEL, but I think it's a great move for the AHL/NHL based on the lack of quality refs, in particular with the change to the 2 refs and some retirements and the early graduation to the NHL and AHL of guys that weren't ready, IMO.

Ovechkin got speared by Corey Perry in the WC quarterfinals, and looked pretty hurt. He missed a couple shifts (but stayed on the bench). Malkin scored on the ensuing power play to make it 3-0.

Ovechkin just had his first shift back, and absolutely steamrolled Jordan Eberle. So yeah, he'll be alright

Good to see he's still got the anger.

and after the whistle, Perry sucker punched Ovy to start a scrum, and as it calmed down, they showed Perry shoving the refs to try and start it up again.

Corey Perry already has 3 minor penalties in this game through two periods (Roughing, Slashing, Slashing), and Russia has scored on 2 of them.

No thanks.

Ovechkin only checks smaller players

You're right. Spotting the other team a 2-0 lead on selfish, unnecessary penalties is a great way to advance in the playoffs.

Hey, Im just getting tired of people dogging the likes of Perry, Cooke, and the like...when those guys ****ing win....compared to our sorry ass no care team sitting at home or playing in this stupid tournament.

If some of the Caps had the same intensity...you take the bad with the good, albeit misguided at times, they might still be playing right now in the real tournament.

Semin does some stupid **** and takes a ton of penalties, too. All I'm saying is that taking dumb penalties isn't an indicator of drive or passion. Sometimes it's just stupid.

I get it. Corey Perry is awesome because he's intense and cares a lot. As a byproduct of his intensity, he always advances in the playoffs and never has an opportunity to sit at home or play in the tournament that he is currently playing in.

Or... perhaps... just maybe... someone has to win the Stanley Cup every year, and there will always be a player on that team that you can point at that takes stupid penalties. However, once they win the Cup, they go from being a player that takes dumb penalties to a player that cares a lot and is intense.

whilst i would love for the caps to get someone with some fiestyness, the caps lost this year because halak played out of his mind. cooke's team lost to the same team team the caps lost to, and 1 guy wouldn't have made a difference.

F Matt Cooke (3 cheers for Evander Kane). I'm pretty firmly in the agitators suck camp, but Perry is not an agitator. He's a a goalscorer and a genius.

DamoSpin "Steve Downie should never, ever play for Canada. Slewfoots Semin, then tries to fight Fedorov..."

I didn't see the slewfoot, but Fedorov was giving Downie the business pretty good in front of the net. I saw at least a slash to the legs and a crosscheck to the face. Hardly Downie "trying to fight" Fedorov.

Nothing wrong with liking stupid when it plays for a division rival.

(and yeah, I know that was totally not what he meant)

I doubt it was that bad...even if it was...oh well.

At least someone is doing somewhere outside of Washington DC...because god knows we'll never see it here.

Dale Hunter waves from a far.

from Wikipedia:

"As of the end of the 2005–06 NHL season, he holds the record for most number of playoff games played without playing for a Stanley Cup-winning team, at 186 games."
