Just because it's a pet peeve of mine, ESPN Insider just links to other online articles. The ESPN editors then cherry pick a title such as "Kings to trade Quick?" based on a speculative article that the Kings might be forced to trade Quick eventually if Jonathan Bernier becomes the #1 down the road.

Anyways, the better link would be: http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sport...299/story.html

Which in itself is mostly speculation......

Quote:
Jaromir Jagr is a big Roman Cervenka fan, but the Oilers are lukewarm and aren't interested in signing the five-foot-11, 187-pound free-agent forward who led the Czech League in scoring with 73 points. They feel Linus Omark is better. The Toronto Maple Leafs want Cervenka, feeling he could be an upgrade on Mikael Grabovski.

Why does every promising player want to play for Toronto?

Irritating...

The ESPN website requires an account. I thought maybe people would like to see what was being said on the Toronto forum. Which seems to provide some decent commentary from Leafers.

Opportunity.

Not only to play in the NHL, but its biggest market. If you're going to make it somewhere, it might as well be Toronto.

Creating "job security" issues is the best thing Brian Burke could have possibly done for the Leafs.

He tore up the Czech league at 24 years of age, made the Czech Olympic and WC team.

It's worth a shot.

I'm bemused. (For the record, I'm not pro or anti Toronto)

The past year I've read posts on the boards along the lines of "Burke's a joke of a GM, Toronto's a joke of Franchise, ect, ect". Yet since Toronto has been making attempts to upgrade, I read things "why is Toronto signing every one that comes along" (please note I'm not necessarily refering to those who posted in this thread, it just makes me think of what I've been reading with the past few acquisitions-no offense intended).

Toronto had a bad year. They are TRYING to improve in "outside the box" ways, particularly while not having draft picks in this years draft.

So why does Toronto get guff for trying to improve? (I'm not criticizing, I'm openly curious).

The Czech league is a joke. Good amount of skill but the game reminds me more of figureskating than hockey. Will be interesting how he adjusts to NA style game.

Worth a gamble as a free agent i guess.

Burke has shown that he will treat players right. i.e. Bryzgalov

The Leafs have Francois Allaire, the best goalie coach in the world. (Leafs have signed 3 young goalies in the last year)

The Leafs, one of the most storied franchises, have the youngest team in the league, so young players feel as though they could be part of an ascendence to something special.

Toronto is one of the nicest cities to live in in North America. Safe, beautiful parks and waterfront, great restaurants/bars, multicultural, lots of fun for a young person with cash.

Nice, apparently he's been good in the WC, so I'm glad Burke is looking at this guy. For a guy who I used to think wasn't a fan of European players, he sure is proving me wrong. Signing this guy is a win-win for us. If he looks good in camp, he makes the Leafs, if not he gives the Marlies some fire power.

Come on Burke, lets get him signed!

Ya I guess. He destroyed the league, but looking at who is in the league it doesnt really make much of a statement. Guess there are a few guys I know:

Outscored:

Sykora
Straka
Dopita
Nedved

but theyre all so old. Its like he's playing in an old timers league while he's just in his prime.

Hey hope he signs with the leafs and turns into a good scoring threat, i just cant see it happening.

For the same reason that I hate the Yankees. Every player wants to play here and other fans don't like it. Being the largest market in hockey we are hated on because of the TV coverage we get and how much media attention, so obviously other fans are unhappy so they just hate everything we do. It gets irritating when people do that, but I'm trying to cope with it (and not say stupid, I got an infraction for that today).
