Toronto are favourites for Roman Cervenka.

Yup. The media attention probably bugs others... that's why the Canucks hate the Leafs the most lol even though Flames and Oilers are their rivals.

Leafs had a bad year so it's much easier to hate on them but they had too much of the same old culture. I hated Stajan, Toskala, Poni etc... not to say they are bad players, they are serviceable on some teams but just that reputation and the way they've been on a losing team and Leafs needed a change of culture which we will get with the new core of Kadri, Bozak, Schenn, Phanuef, Kessel, Kulemin, Gustavsson, Gunnarson. You look at the league now, pretty much all the good teams have a core of young players.

The past year I've read posts on the boards along the lines of "Burke's a joke of a GM, Toronto's a joke of Franchise, ect, ect". Yet since Toronto has been making attempts to upgrade, I read things "why is Toronto signing every one that comes along" (please note I'm not necessarily refering to those who posted in this thread, it just makes me think of what I've been reading with the past few acquisitions-no offense intended).

Toronto had a bad year. They are TRYING to improve in "outside the box" ways, particularly while not having draft picks in this years draft.

So why does Toronto get guff for trying to improve? (I'm not criticizing, I'm openly curious).

Because we are Toronto.

For the same reasons other teams in different sports(I won't mention them) get hated on.

It doesn't matter what we do.

people hate Toronto...

MTL, OTT, BUF, and BUF cuz of the division

VAN... we're still trying to figure out what their problem is... they're like that unknown kid talking crap behind the popular kid's back... and the popular kid is like "who the eff are you?"

others for various reasons we have yet to realize... but they're out there.

good for Burke getting Cervenka... now we need Zuccarello-Aansen (sp?)

We don't have Cervenka yet, and MZA is a Ranger.

Supposedly Zuccarello-Aasen has signed with the Rangers, deal won't be announced until after the WC: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=318309

......and unless I missed something, the Leafs haven't signed Cervenka. The ESPN "source" is an article from a writer suggesting that the Oilers aren't interested and that he heard that the Leafs were. Hardly concrete stuff.

While some of those reasons can be the fact why people hate them both, the main reason, well really the only reason I hate the Yankees is because they just outbid the whole league to bring in players. They have a great history but today's Yankees teams are just dumb. The main reason players won't go there is because they can give you a 9 digit check if you really want it. It's just stupid. At least in the NHL they have a salary cap to actually make it entertaining. The teams are at least on a more even playing field, unlike MLB.

Burke's batting average in getting these guys from Europe and NCAA the last year is quite incredible. He's gotten the majority of all the most sought-after guys. It's always great to get free talent to give your organization more depth.

helps that he can basically promise them roster spots.

None of them have been promised a roster spot. In fact, Hanson and Bozak played much of their seasons in the AHL.

If Cervenka signs here, he'll have to compete for a spot.

He could sign in Pittsburgh and wouldn't have a much harder time making the roster as a winger.

But as a forward they know they'll have a good shot at winning a roster spot compared to quite a few other teams.

I see him as being like Grabovski minus the defense.

I hope I am wrong.

I'm confused. Burkie is scouring European veterans to fill in for his team. I can see the goaltenders, but Fletcher brought in Frogren (lol), and Rickard Wallin. Now it's Cervenka. Brian -- there's a reason these guys are in Europe.

Although I'm not too excited about these guys. Wallin came to be Gustavsson's room mate and Frogren we still don't know, those guys didn't have the hype of a Gustavsson or Cervenka this year. And Gustavsson and Bozak have been great adds this year.

Having a good shot and being promised a spot are two different things.

Worst case scenario, he plays in the AHL. It's a no-risk situation.

Nothing wrong with free players... Leino for instance was a free signing by Detroit did not fit in well with the system moved on to Philly and has looked pretty good these playoffs.

I suppose he could have stayed in Europe cause "theres a reason these guys are in Europe"

It's hard to criticize a signing like this (if we get him). If he makes the team, good, otherwise he'll make the Marlies a lot better.

We need to start rebuilding our farm system. With no draft picks, we need to do something
