woooopsss. i missed last years game, and since i tend to forget who plays in such events a month later..yeah. i often embarass myself with statements like that.
on a side note, olli jokinen is the whoopi goldberg of hockey
It may sound hokey but the NHL All-Star Game, outdoors, in Las Vegas. Let's remember the pre-season game played there a few years ago. The Awards Show is there. Anything Vegas gets attention.
If it's about Vegas, than yeah. They would certainly use Sam Boyd Stadium instead of a parking lot, but is that also a viable stadium for what they're trying to do?
It's looking like the away team will have no bearing on whether or not they get future Winter Classics. NBC wants the ratings of big-market teams, while the NHL tries to make it more about the city.
Cory Schneider signed a 2-year $900K extension today, which I just can't believe. What a terrible job by that agent. You're behind a guy who is on a 12-year contract, obviously signaling that you are not part of their long-term solution. That's gotta be a 1-year deal with the opportunity to be a Group VI UFA next season.

The Winter Classic will be two teams that get ratings. I don't know why anyone is surprised. Its not going to be the Flyers this year so why not Pens/Caps?
The first of what is likely to be a series of debates on something that might grow up to be an agenda item also took place in Philadelpia this week. Ken Holland of the Red Wings told the Detroit Free Press prior to the meetings that: "I'd like to see more games decided in overtime than shootout. I don't mind the shootout, I just don't want the shootout to decide so many games.
"My suggestion is extend OT from five minutes to eight minutes or from five minutes to 10 minutes," Holland added. "Then maybe do we go half of it four-on-four, half of it three-on-three? I just want to have a conversation to see if other people feel like I do."
It will take days, maybe weeks, to get a sense of what others in the room felt, but it's fair to say that Holland's proposal will open the gates of internal debate. The shootout came into being as a concession to fans who had long bemoaned the number of games that resulted in a tie after regulation and a brief overtime. The league thought of the shootout as a reward after a lost season (due to the lockout), and though there were murmurs of discontent from the GM ranks, public criticism was largely nonexistent given that it was an initiative from Commissioner Gary Bettman's office.

It's fine that it's not the Flyers. I'm okay with the Caps getting it. But man, at least put another team in there ie Rangers.

GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have re-signed left wing Scottie Upshall to a one-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Any news out of the Yotes situation? I go over to the Business of Hockey threads and I don't feel like reading through 900 pages of people yelling at one another.
More rivalry between the Devils and Flyers at an AHL level?
Depends, because the Devils have been notorious for having terrible AHL teams in the past. This season was the first time their AHL team made the playoffs since 2000 and have not won a playoff series since 1998.
I know it's early, but I'd still love to hear at least something from the Flyers management on who and what exactly they want, not necessarily names, but at least positions.

Bettman said at his state of the league address that the Coyotes will stay in Phoenix through next season. I thought I saw that Reinsdorf has pulled out for good, and some sort of exclusivity for IEH. I think Glendale voted that they would be willing to cover losses for next season.
Whenever I need a update in those threads, I just ask for someone to explain it to me in English what is going on.
NCAA introducing new rules, essentially allowing itself to be a guinea pig. Hybrid icing instead of no-touch, power plays even if you score on a delayed call, more fierce headshot rules, and not being able to ice the puck while short handed.
Anyone know why NHL Network is showing these games:
12:00 PM Vintage Games: Calgary vs Quebec from January 15, 1983
2:00 PM Vintage Games: Toronto vs Boston from October 26, 1968
4:00 PM Vintage Games: Toronto vs Colorado from January 11, 1980

Most of which I dislike. Most NCAA coaches have already said they are heavily against the proposed changes, but for all intents and purposes the rules are already passed. The NCAA has not introduced an automatic delay of game for pucks over the glass (its subjective right now and rarely called) so that will differ from potential applications at the pro level when you start looking at the no icing during PK.
