Guess what? JYP won 4-2 (what a surprise) and Sami Vatanen scored the game winner (surprise again) . Looks like this will not be my last post in this thread... He has been a BEAST so far this season, and I hope he continues to dominate.
GP--G--A--P--+-
16--6--6--12--+10
His +- rating (+10) is the best in the league!
Man, it´s nice to be a JYP fan nowadays!
Edit. The bad thing was that he took two penalties in a row in the first period. He needs to calm down a little bit. And of course his still young and needs to gain more strenght and physicality.
wow. Kid is going to be a star. Anyone think he makes the team next yr?
I think the Ducks will give him a long-hard look at. He needs to show that he can translate his game. Maybe half a season in the A? or a full season would be the best-case-scenario for both parties.

That would be my guess. I think he'll come over next year, but he'll have to absolutely blow everyone away in training camp/pre-season to earn a spot. Similar to what Fowler did this year.
I think he'll spend half a year or the whole in the AHL, depending on how well he performs and Anaheim's injury issues.
A year in the A would be good for him I think.. I definitely dont wanna rush this guy.. now if he performs like fowler and shows hes ready then sure, but if hes on the border then send him down to the A.. this guy could be an absolute stud

I agree with this. His puck skills are so good that he would manage in the NHL right now. However, he is very small for an NHL defenceman, so he should learn the North American playing style at first by playing in the A.

The problem is that we have so many defensemen that need to be moving into the NHL in the next 2 or 3 years that we do not have enough room.
Gardiner Sbisa Vatanen Clark Mitera.
Some will be held back because they will not get a chance.
Vatanen needs to bulk up about 5 kilos by training camp to have good chance of making it right away. Unfortunately he'll join the army in June and he won't have so much time there, what with all the running around in woods and playing soldier boy.

I'll tell you, if there is one place on earth where you have lots of spare time, it's the army.
Rafalski. Vatanen is probably a better skater tough. And his slapshot is sick!
They're about the same height. Though I think Vesa Rantanen wrote in Veikkaaja magazine long time ago that Rafalski is actually 170 cm tops - with socks on.
Are there any comparable NHL players to Vatanen? The only one that immediately comes to mind (because of his size) is Kimo Timonen.
Timonen is not a really good comparison. Kimmo was always known to be more of a defensive defenceman with good puck handling skills. Vatanen is an offensive dynamo, who likes to join the rush. He is better skater than Kimmo and he has a better shot. However Kimmo is and always was better defensively than Sami Vatanen will ever be. A smaller version of Mike Green would be better comparison, or as already said, Lubo Visnovsky.

I don't think height is the only issue concerning Vatanen's size. But he just seems naturally so scrawny and weak, I doubt he will ever have much to improve on the physical department. Sure he'll be able to gain some pounds, but it's hard to fight your genetics. He needs to be a lot bigger to be able play in the NHL. Somewhere around 190 pounds or 87 kilos.

Please keep up posted on Vatanen. This kid is so talented, I really hope he makes it to the NHL.
For me, there is no question he makes it. I had him ranked 21st on my top 30 for the 2009 draft. Supremely talented...the only way he doesn't play...and play well in the NHL is if he prefers to stay in Europe.
My favorite non-Senator prospect. It's great to hear he's doing well. I think when it's all said and done, he'll be an Erik Karlsson type player in the NHL. Lacking in size, but tremendous skill, superb skating and the slapshot of a player twice his size.
Vatanen is now almost PPG player in FEL, he most propably would be over PPG in AHL. He's more than enough fit for NHL and I have hard time to believe he wouldn't be NHL-ready already. With or without bulking up. If he keeps on getting better this year, there is no way AHL or FEL would be the right place for him. Playing in the wrong leagues just for putting up stupid amount of points a season isn't exactly the best way to go.
EDIT: 1 goal and 2 primary assists in todays' game. Two periods left in the game.
