Apple Dethrones Microsoft

Gotta say, I never thought I'd see the day and I still find it hard to believe.

Quote:
SEATTLE — Apple has surpassed Microsoft as the largest technology company in the world by market capitalization.

On Wednesday, Apple Inc.'s shares slipped $1.11 to close at $244.11, making its market cap about $222 billion.

But Microsoft Corp.'s stock fell $1.06, or 4.1 percent, to close at $25.01, for market cap of about $219 billion.

Honest question, why does this mean anything at all? The only thing that matters to me is market share.

Market Share of what? Business Desktops? Backend Servers? Personal Communication Devices? Where is the "computer" business headed anyways?

This is a longer discussion than I wanna post on right now, but one way history could play out is: All Backend Datacenter Servers Running Apps and Serving up data on Linux based servers while we all connect to them with Ipad type devices, maybe Googles running Chrome OS. Where would that leave MS if they can't compete in that arena? And they aren't exactly burning up the world in the mobile electronics consumer market.

All I'm saying is that it's quite an accomplishment for Apple considering where they were at one point and one I am surprised by still.

Not to be a party pooper, but market capitalization is actually more influenced by people’s perception of the company’s performance than its actual worth.

Don't get me wrong this is great news for Apple.

Aren't large portions of each company privatley owned? Does market capitalization calculate the implicit value of the entire company based on the publicly traded value or only the sum of the value of its publicly traded stocks?

Hmm, funny that comes out the same day as this:

Quote:
The Justice Department is examining Apple’s tactics in the market for digital music, and its staff members have talked to major music labels and Internet music companies, according to several people briefed on the conversations.
The antitrust inquiry is in the early stages, these people say, and the conversations have revolved broadly around the dynamics of selling music online.

I would say that should be reversed since this came out today because it happened "today"

They're attempting to cross the start bar! FIRE!!!

Create a diversion and lose them in windows 100x more useful context menus!

Then quickly regroup before they charge us $500 for 4 gigs of RAM!

You are not a serious PC user or gamer if you own a mac. You may be an 'artist' that uses it, but I can assure you that a PC can do just as much. Probably for damn near half the price.

Proven fact that you won't get the slick look, the reduced weight and the relatively high quality hardware as a package in one "PC" laptop, without it costing MORE than an Apple product.

Sorry guys, but go back to your bunkers.

But the question is, does one really NEED one of those?

Who said anything about a laptop? The gimped child of the wireless revolution? The pint sized one?

And a quick glance at newegg says I can get a MacBook Pro comparable windows laptop for the same price - except for the fact the windows one has a 256 gig SSD. A $650 option by Apple's standard, right next to their $400 RAM.

I won't argue the laptop issue, because I don't own a laptop, I don't want a laptop, I don't care about laptops, and as a result, I don't know much about any laptops out there. Desktops, this is definitely not the case, thus the thriving Hackintosh community. The only place Apple possibly holds any footing in the Desktop argument is if you decide to argue OS - that's another argument I choose to not bother with - I prefer Windows, if someone else prefers OS X or Linux or whatever, all the power to them, I'm not going to try to convert them.

Doesn't Bill Gates/Microsoft own a significant % of Apple? (Or did they sell it?)
