Throwing out the obvious "our team has missed the playoffs the last two years, has no marketable name, associated with the trap, blah blah blah..." arguments, which would be a better location for a hypothetical Winter Classic? The choices:
TCF Bank Stadium:

Okay, our goal is by the Bong Bridge while yours is three miles west of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
We'll put the Wild on the thinner side of the ice. If the ice collapses, several of our players will be safe since they don't play defense & will likely be gliding through the neutral zone. Half of the board wants Backstrom out of here, sooo.... $6m off the books.
Honestly, attendance and logistics be damned. I want to see it on a frozen pond (*pond sounds cooler than lake ).
Somewhere like the Lake of the Woods/Boundary Waters would be an unbelievable setting for an event like this with the camera shots. Even somewhere around Eveleth to be near the US Hockey Hall of Fame. The Northern towns would all get up for an event of this magnitude and it could likely be a week long draw for them. Even though you're not getting anywhere near the attendance you'd look for in this game, I envision you could have have some sort of large "fair" type of event. Maybe even move the US Pond Hockey Tournament to the same venue on the same weekend. Everyone flocking to the same small town for multiple events would be great scene for the NHL and would be a different type of novelty for the NHL to peddle.
With that said, TCF Bank stadium makes the most sense from a game sight lines sense. Target Field makes slightly more sense for a logistics around the venue view point, although, really not much of a noticeable difference.
Some of ya'll are NUTS if you think 40K are going to cram Uni. Ave to watch that **** at TCF seriously lol. Don't give me Gophercrap about it either because 1) the amount of student body who WALK to the game and 2) most car pool. There isn't even remotely close to enough parking ramps down there to do a game like that within walking distance of the stadium. Not to mention Target Field gives you the "warm and fuzzies" since you have the better side of the Skyline in the backdrop and the big Minny/Paul sign too that could be lit up every time we score
Plus 4th street is closer to me than Uni Ave by the stadium is....
