If we lose Kulie, I will be VERY angry. Just saying.
Its a possibility that Burke will lose him. Just like the thread I made a few weeks back. Kulemin is holding out on signing for some reason ... Money? Other reasons? It has nothing to do with the WC as more than a few posters had shouted.
If the leafs lose Kulemin for something like 1m than I would call Burke a failure. The cap MAY go up 2 million, We can bury Jeff Finger, we can dump Grabovski somewhere, we can not pay old guys 1million a year and just use younger players at 500,000. The leafs are not in a position to lose good young players with his style of play.
FFS.
Doesn't mean we need to have MORE overpaid players.

I agree. No need to lose him over a rather small amount of money in regards to NHL salaries.
I have a feeling Kulemin does not want to stay in Toronto. Before someone jumps on me now saying his family and kids love it here ... I really think he wants out.

Agreed we might not be overpaying him by much but we'd still be overpaying him.
I understand kinda where he's coming from asking for 3 mil with Grabo getting the same 3mil and him having such an improved season but at the same time he's got 67 points total in his NHL career. I just don't want us to have any less cap room than necessary even if it is only 500k or so less.

Why would he be turned off Toronto?
Is there anything that has happened to him in Toronto that would encourage him to hardball the Leafs?

He's a scout's dream in the way he prepares himself and plays an unselfish game, making smart decisions with the puck. With his bloodlines, he certainly understands what it will take to make it at the next level.

2.5M (My max) is more than enough for a player who hasn't even hit 20 goals or 40 points. They try and base things off of "potential"or but he STILL hasn't hit that point yet, and until he does, he shouldn't be making 3M.
Kulemin's in my top 3 for favorite players on the team right now. I do NOT want him to go, but if we have to fork over an arm and a leg, then we might have to.

I really hope he signs. I just have a vibe that he wants out. Perhaps he thinks that the team will continue to tank? I can not answer this. If he wanted to sign he would have come to an agreement with Burke already. It had absolutely nothing to do with the WC.
Maybe playing for Russia at the WC has influenced him?

We have overpaid players yes, but this is a player who can improve big time on his game. Is a 3 million player really that bad in terms the salary cap? I see plently of teams with an overpaid player and they still are doing alright. There are always way to shift money around but players like Kulemin don't grow on trees. Be dumb to lose him like that IMO.

Just like
Bobby Ryan wants out of Anaheim,
Erik Johnson wants out of St. Louis,
Blake Wheeler wants out of Boston,
Carey Price wants out of Montreal,
Peter Mueller wants out of Colorado,
Wojtek Wolski wants out of Phoenix,
Chris Stewart wants out of Colorado,
Sam Gagner wants out of Edmonton,
Devin Setoguchi wants out of San Jose...

Chicago's not going to be alright soon, because they have so many overpaid players, they're going to lose out on their depth.
I agree it would be dumb, I just don't want to start a trend of overpaying players. First Finger, then Grabo (Only slightly), then it could be Kulemin, (only slightly as well) then you never know. Someone could come off of a great season, get paid to play a certain way, and never play that way again. I'm just saying we need to be cautious with what we do.

leafs need kulemin more than kulemin needs the leafs, that's all there is to it. he knows it, his agent knows it. if kulemin walks over a quarter or half a mil, that is a disaster.

I didn't know you were the GM of 9 teams. Lets not forget Belak is the Montreal GM

For Kulemin, it's either the Leafs or the KHL. I'm guessing the Leafs as I don't see any other team offering that kind of money he's looking for. I'm optimistic that a deal will get done, but if he leaves, we have $3mm to spend on another player or two. Also, if money is his passion and not hockey, I don't want him on my team.
If the cap is around $60 million, then $3 million is one-twentieth, or 5% of that. I think it's an appropriate number for a player who'll be in the top six in icetime among forwards.
It just seems like everyone here thinks they know all the answers. Guess what, you don't. None of us know what goes on behind the scenes with the team and management. Maybe there is more to Kulemin not signing than we know, maybe not... For all we know he could sign tomorrow or be packaged off in a deal on July,1st.
Everyone on this board has different opinions. They should all not be taken too seriously as this is the web! Your not the GM of the Leafs and I sure am not!
I personally like him and would like to see him stay.

Haha. Agreed.
Like I said before, I just think we need to be careful with how we use our money. Kulemin is free to stay in my books. Love him.

i would be very surprised if he didnt get offers from other nhl teams. they pay people good money to know about diamonds in the rough like kulemin.
Leafs are probably the one team in the league that is bulletproof-safe against offersheets. Burke was livid when his own Duck player, Dustin Penner, was given an offersheet, and he let the world know about it. And he took the extremely high road with the Kessel situation. Rather than giving Kessel an offer sheet and paying a measly 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in 2010, Burke decided to overpay with two 1sts and a 2nd.
I think with Burke as our GM, we don't have to worry about offer sheets, probably because of the respect other GMs will have for Burke's attitude towards offer sheets.

I am with you on this. I would like him in the starting line up come October 7th against the Habs. I guess all we can do is wait and see how BB spends all of our money.
Im sure there will be added players to the roster this summer via trade/ufa market. I just hope he does not overspend on something we don't need.
