Flyers at the draft

in the midst of all this stanley cup excitement, i seem to forget about all the other things im usually counting down the days 'til around this time of year. What's great about that, is when the flyers season is done, win or lose, it's going to seem like a shorter off season because draft day will be right around the corner, and then free agency right after that. we should do this stanley cup thing more often.

anyway, I've been doing some pondering about our current goaltending situation and it struck me that it could be a great move for the Flyers to try and obtain a late 1st round/early 2nd round pick in order to draft a guy like Jack Campbell or Calvin Pickard. Granted, it's not guaranteed where either of them will be drafted.

do you guys think this is a legit possibility? is it a good idea? what do you think it would take?

does anyone have any other draft day game plans that you'd like to see the Flyers execute?

Trade players for draft picks?

This is not what Holmgren does. That's the bed he made as far as this upcoming draft. He's not going to go out of his way to get an 18-year old kid and remove someone off the roster.

Pretty sure it's conditional on winning the Cup.

campbell will go in the top 20 for sure, pickard could be obtainable. i have seen some of him, not really campbell, eh, i dunno, i feel like he is too far away to draft and bank on. i would rather take a few shots in the later rounds. look at ericsson, he was a 7th rounder and is climbing the ranks in sweden swiftly. just peered at the spring HF report and he is now our top ranked prospect, though that may say something negative about the state of our farm system more than something superlative about him.

i think there are still great values to be had on young goalies, particularly coming out of europe. i would love to get campbell if some of the things i have read are true but i dont see us moving from a late second to a mid first to get him with what we have to lay out there.

just a related personal aside, ill be at the draft this year (finally come to that hockey hotbed, southern california!!!) so if any of you guys are coming or want particular pics or updates let me know. i am only going to the first day, bachelor party the next day (not my own ... thankfully!)

We're not going to spend a high pick on a goalie even if we had one. I don't see it happening. Look at a guy like Kent Simpson, Philipp Grubauer, Jonas Gunnarsson, or Frederik Pettersson-Wentzel in the middle rounds.

with no picks hopefully until the 4th round im going to be spending the day going "who the hell is this guy?".

i think weve made our prospect-player acquisitions already and itll be all about the longhot high potential high risk players.

Just wondering, would anyone want to go to the draft this year?

I am looking for someone to go with that actually has an interest in the prospects this year, but not too many people I know care that much about them.

Let me know if you want to go.

So can I get a quick list of what picks we do have in what round? Do we even have any in the first 3 rounds?

Grubauer won't get past the second round, I think.

Maxime Clermont has been my goalie of choice in mock draft. I think he was a backup for he Gatineau team with Claude Giroux that went to the Memorial Cup. Two-year starter, and he's a Flyers fan.

Grubauer is getting severely overrated. He was the product of an absolutely INSANE Windsor team.

Homer: Hey, Ville, we don't have any picks until the 4th round so just throw in some names from your hometown. I mean, it can't be any worse than what we'll do anyhow...

Hasn't stopped people in the past from guys being drafted in the 2nd round for those reasons.

The Kings drafted Dany Roussin (sp?) in the 2nd round (as a re-entry no less, he was previously drafted in the 8th round I think), completely based on the fact that he was Sidney Crosby's linemate in juniors.

Never said that it wont stop him from getting drafted, but he is getting blown out of proportion.

He doesnt have the talent that Simpson, FPW, and Gunnarsson have.

I would trade every draft pick in the future if the Flyers could just win the Cup this year.

Well, that's good because that is pretty much what Homer did.
