Next year Handzus is gone(replaced by Schenn).Year after Smyth(Replaced by Moller). 10 million in two years freed to add to Doughty, JJ and Simmonds etc... Stoll and Williams are gone in the trade. You want to win or just spin our wheels? We still have plenty of young players that can play the filler roles for cheap.
You need to add 2 reserve forwards and 1 reserve d-man.
I like it but I don't see Stoll and Williams being moved for Spezza..just won't happen unless we throw more in it.
I'll stick take Kovalchuk, JW, and Stoll/Schenn. =]
I like Spezza, but at 7 million dollars and us having to lose a few key players and good prospects I would rather try and land the more dynamic Kovalchuk.
We can always trade Stoll to relieve space, I am sure the Oilers would welcome him back for a pick.
If not Kovalchuk, I would attempt Marleau. At least we don't have t give up the farm.
In any case Spezza should not even be a thought until July 2nd after Kovalchuk and company sot themselves out.
Would you trade Kopitar for that return? Ottawa will want at least one of Brown/Simmonds/Johnson + Schenn, Hickey and a first for Spezza.
Well said.
While I totally disagree with the Spezza trade idea altogether, if you're Ottawa, your number 1 center spot is now up for grabs to Stoll, Cullen, or Kelly. I think they'll throw up at that.
Look at what they got for Heatly, I would think stoll jw hickey first package is similar if not better for their depth
And take a look at the Heatley situation in the summer, far more different then Spezza. I could be wrong, has Spezza spoken out and said he's wanted a trade?
Yes he has but he has since retracted the statement. There are threads on the deal board that have links, I am just too lazy to add them right now.
I still say that Spezza is the absolute wrong guy for us due to his lack of heart and drive and I watch the guy play at least 30 games each year. (not to mention that I watched him allot in juniors).
I want us to get a legitimate second line center too but we might have to wait until Schenn comes along for that to happen.
If you ever saw him play live you know this guy floats without the puck. Out transition game is not there yet he will mostly be effective on the pp. DL says he wants a better 5-5 play so kovy is not that guy. Marleau will be the ufa he would want to sign. And getting spezza for disposable assets really takes this team to the next level

Uh, 29 ESG and only 12 PPG from Kovalchuk last year, 4th in the league in ESG. Kopitar was 40th in the league in ESG with 19, 14 on the PP.
2008-09: Kovalchuk with 31 ESG, tied for 2nd in the NHL.
