Samsonov to be bought out or traded

Quote:
A decision on Brind'Amour is not the only one facing the Canes.

General manager Jim Rutherford said Wednesday that another may be made on veteran winger Sergei Samsonov.

Samsonov, 31, is due $2.8 million next season in the final year of his contract. But the Canes, looking to transition to younger forwards next season, could elect to try and trade him or buy him out.

"We're still working through that," Rutherford said.

I think he signed that contract a few years ago when he was still a good player.

I think Glen Sather moonlights as a consultant for the Hurricanes.

I'd take him on Colorado if Preissing goes the other way.

Someone please take Preissing

Isn't this like the third time a team has flirted with the idea of buying him out? Gotta think his time in the NHL is just about up. What a strange career.

In 2008, when he first went to Carolina, he got 32 points in 38 games. Then he got paid and stopped scoring.

While I don't agree with the contract Rutherford gave him, it was the term (3 years) that bothered me more than the money.

He came to the Canes in 07/08 and played extremely well...32 pts (14G/18A) in 38 games and a +6. For that, Rutherford gave him a 3 year deal.

In the first year of the deal, he was still respectable...48 points and he worked hard and I can accept that for the money he was being paid.

Last year, he played poorly, but in fairness to Samsonov, almost everyone on the Canes played poorly, especially the first 1/2 of the season AND he played a bunch of time on a line with Rod Brind'Amour who was a green jacket worthy -29.

Now that the Canes are in a year of transition (they have a bunch of young guys and need to figure out what type of players they will be), there isn't much room for Samsonov as he isn't a 4th line player.

I will say this though, the guy did not lack in effort.

During his tenure as a Blackhawk, he actually created a lot and is a very good passer/stickhandler. Just for whatever reason, ANY chance he created refused to end up in the net.

And by the end of his time as a Hawk he had no confidence left

Why did they re-sign him to that kind of loot? Everyone knew it was a mistake at the time.

Something around Sarich or Staios for Samsonov? Do the Hurricanes need a defenseman?

He tends to do that.

PoS doesn't want to go anywhere near Carolina. He was technically part of the Canes' organization, but they had to give LA the ok that they would trade him, which they did in a 3way trade sending him to the Oliers.

I'd rather have him than Samsonov.

I think Nashville might be a good fit, maybe someone like the Rangers too. Just off the top of my head.

Even watching him, he is still showing flashes of of skill which is the frustrating part. Where ever he ends up, there needs to be two things to help him get back in to form, a solid playmaker and patient coaching staff.
