'00 Devils v '10 Hawks teams were actually very similar, it would be a good battle, but I'm not sure the Hawks would be able to put up with the physicality from Holik, McKay, Lemieux, Dano, Stevens versus the Hawks with Eager and Byfuglien....offensively, the teams were like stated above, very similar

Big deal. Anyone with half a brain can come to the conclusion that the 00 devils were depper, more skilled, quicker and overall better than these hawks. Not to mention we didn't need to sit in the basement to get top players like the hawks.

Try again johnny boy.

Devils fans get a little too whiny sometimes. Guy gets asked a question, what do you expect him to say? "Dude, this team sucks in comparison."

honestly, other than the goalie, it's about as close as it can get considering the differences between post/pre lockout hockey and obviously, the cap.

if you guys can't handle this, the "Kovalchuk is a true lifelong Devil" crowd may kill themselves in a few weeks.

I think it is justified [To be whiny]. I think NJ fans are sick of producing nothing but excellence for just about two decades and not getting the respect and recognition they deserve....

I think that is why so many fans are just giddy over a player like Kovalchuk. It doesn't matter if he is good for the team or not...He brings the recognition so many Devil Fans crave.

I just noticed this was Chere (originally thought it was a CHI source).

Man, Chere is turning into a troll. Who knows if Madden even replied the same way that was written. Who knows if Madden even replied.

Well, then they gotta learn to turn of the switch. Because it's 4 months until a meaingful game is going to be played, and the way the next 6 weeks might go, there will be plenty more non-complimental things said about the Devils.

As much as you and the 'collective' so to speak may clash over the signing of Kovalchuk and other topics, I can certainly agree that this is a theme amongst everything NJ.

We are a state with a chip on our shoulder and something to prove, to misquote Bruce Springsteen.

He should be gratefull that the New Jersey Devils actually gave him a shot to enter the NHL and be were he is now instead of downing us... but whatever. He's playing 4th line minutes with the Hawks and isn't all that impressive IMO.
I agree with most everything in this thread but this. Come on, man. The Devils had a WEALTH of top draft picks.

1983-1987, 89, 91...

Just because they achieved more in a shorter time with top draft picks shouldn't take away from them. The Devils were built off of a few drafts when they landed Nieds, Shanny and Brodeur, for the most part.

Brodeur was a top draft pick???

Umm, Lou like traded down to #20 to get him.

Niedermayer was a gift pick, still high nonetheless, but not from a result of the NJD finishing at or near the bottom of the NHL.

Shanahan was lost for what almost amounted to Curtis Joesph & Rod Brind'Amour, if not for the shrewdness of an intelligent GM

Comparing Chicago to the NJD for draft position is ridiculous.

Please.

What's he supposed to say...."Yeah we're not as good as the Devils cups team, I'm def. not what I used to be and Keith is no Niedemayer. Toews isn't half the man Jason Arnott is"

Sounds like sour grapes to me. As he did he when asked about being traded way back when. Do your thing Maddog be a Flyer killer and appreciate what you got when you were in NJ and playing well. Move On

I don't see anywhere in the article where Madden actually says "This is the best team I've ever played on". It sounds to me like he was comparing the Hawks to the Devils teams he played on post-lockout, and Chere spun it to his own ends.

Madden said the Hawks were a deeper and more skilled team. What part of that is wrong? He said the Devils were built to win pre-lockout. Can anybody here honestly argue that point? The Devils have won a total of 2 playoff series in the last 5 years. The Hawks have already won 3 series this year. Madden is two wins away from another Cup. Why wouldn't he be happy with the team he's on?

The '10 Hawks and the '00 Devils are similar teams. Fantastic GA and GF in the regular season, skill throughout a deep forward corps, and a strong defence. The only way the '00 Devils were superior was having Marty in net.

Not sure what you're driving at, but I think the above correction is fair.

Not as dramatic as the Pens, but still a boost from a tremendous #1 & #3 punch that can help put a good team over the top. Nothing to be ashamed of.

Didn't your 95 team have a #3 , #5 and #6 pick?

I am just sick of everyone grouping us in as some sort of Penguins fail reward

In fact we got screwed over in 04 when we should have picked Malkin but got knocked down to pick bust Cam Barker

07 was the hockey gods correcting that mistake

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just respond with:

#5, #1, #2, #1, #2. Overall.

They were handed Crosby and Malkin and took Staal over Toews and Backstrom
