Back up goalie options for 2010-11-Hedberg,Biron and Budaj

The Rangers can't have Henrik Lundqvist play another 70 plus game season. 72 games and counting this season.

Some decent free options will be available this summer.

Johan Hedberg. Grew up a Ranger fan in Sweden. 37 years old. Made $1,087,500 this season. If Atlanta looks for an upgrade or goes with Ondrej Pavelec as their #1,Hedberg could be looking for a new team. He would need to take a pay cut to about $800,000 or so. Steve Valiquette had a $725,000 cap # this summer. Back up his fellow countryman and finish his career playing for his favorite team at the Garden.

Re-sign Alex Auld for less than his $1 million salary.

Antero Niittymaki made $600,000 this season. The Flyers should have kept him or Marty Biron and they wouldn't be playing for their season tomorrow.

Manny Legace. Sather tried to sign him in the fall.

Brent Johnson. Made $525,000. Competent back up.

Andrew Raycroft. Made league minimum($500k). 2.42 GAA and .910 save %

The list of free agent goalies

Fan of bringing Auld back next year, if his price is below 1M. Hedberg would be nice, but I really can't see him leaving ATL. Perfect guy to mentor Pavelec, as well as split games with.

Auld should definitely be priority number one. He's as reliable of a backup as there is and won't cost more than a million.

Auld has been teaching Henrik how to play the puck better, and had an active glove hand. The two goaltenders complete each other.

Auld would be perfect, hopefully he likes it here and wants to stay. He has no leverage to ask for anything more than he previously got. I'd imagine most he can ask for is 900K.

If for some reason there's a falling out, I'll take one of these guys at less than a mil (if possible):
Vesa Toskala
Michael Leighton
Brent Johnson
Mike Brodeur
Yann Denis
Manny Legace

I didn't put Hedberg, Budaj, or Nittymaki because I can guarantee they want to go somewhere they'll have a shot at more playing time than here and we'd have to overpay

They NEED SOMEONE who can play 15-18 games. Hank shouldnt play 73 games a season if the Rangers expect to go deep in the playoffs.

I would like to see Auld back, but it is a pretty solid list for a backup looking for a 1 year contract.

Melanie Auld wants to stay in New York. She has her own company where she designs jewelry and handbags. Melanie Auld Designs. You know she wants to be here.

First call should be to Jay Grossman inquiring about Hedberg if he reaches July 1.

I want Nittymaki. When he's not asked to be the #1, he's a pretty darn strong goaltender. Toskala's another guy who I'd love to have backing up Henrik. Hedberg also.

About Auld, eh, I don't know. He's a good puck handler, but I don't trust him to steal a game like I think the above two guys can.

Woah, Fin plus Swede = problems

How crazy would it be to have both goalies from the gold medal game in the Olympics in 2006? Hank vs. Nittymaki.

I would say the opposite. Hedberg first, Auld second. To me, Hedberg is the ideal backup goalie. Plus (god forbid) if Henrik got injured late in the season, Hedberg would be the better choice going into the playoffs (much more playoff experience and success).

Also, Hedberg is a monster when he plays us, it wouldn't hurt to not have to play against him again

Any of the guys RB mentioned in the original post would be fine. They're all capable backups.

Auld without a doubt. If GOD FORBID Henrik goes down with an injury for any extended period of time, he is the only guy who could step in and be starter. Hedberg has started before but as some one whos watched the Thrashers more than any other Rangers fan besides Inferno most likely, Auld>Hedberg. Now if this was the Hedberg of 4 years ago than its a different story.

You dont want a 37 year old Hedberg on this team. Hes really lost a step this year, and doesnt look nearly as good as years past with the Thrashers. Hes let in an enormous amount of soft goals.

Hedberg is definitely my third or fourth choice.

Auld
Nittymaki
Leighton/Hedberg

I think we can resign Auld for a little less than his current contract.

I say we should keep Auld. He seems like a decent back-up and comes at a reasonable price.

Leighton would be ideal with the way he was playing before he got hurt with the Flyers but I think he'll try to find a starting gig somewhere.

IMO Auld is the way to go with Nittymaki, Hedberg and Legace as backup plans. I really would like Nittymaki as a backup if we lost out on Auld

Hedberg

Hank hasn't been injured yet but one day it will come and the backup will have to really play some games. Hedberg has shown he can do this and plays at another level at MSG.
