Top 10 Defensemen

Seems like whenever somebody wants to make a deal for a defenseman, "No, you can't trade that for a guy who is a top 10 D-Man!!!" So that begs the question, who are really the top 10? Here's are mine, in no particular order:

1) Nicklas Lidstrom
2) Rob Blake
3) Scott Niedermayer
4) Brian Leetch
5) Sergei Gonchar
6) Adrian Aucoin
7) Mathieu Schnieder
8) Scott Stevens
9) Zdeno Chara
10) Brian McCabe

comments?

Aucoin is not a top-10.

Zubov, Hatcher, MacInnis

As much as I love MacInnis, he played less games this season than some AHL callups, you can't put him as a top 10. His career might even be over.

Here's my list:

1) Chris Pronger
2) Rob Blake
3) Nicklas Lidstrom
4) Scott Niedermayer
5) Mathieu Schnieder
6) Scott Stevens
7) Zdeno Chara
8) Ed Jovanovski
9) Adrian Aucoin
10) Pavel Kubina

are close: Gonchar, McCabe, Ohlund

What's laughable is how you rank Schneider, Aucoin and Kubina above the 3 you find so hilarious.

In no particular order:

Lidstrom
Chara
Niedermayer
Stevens
Pronger
Blake
Redden
Jovanovski
Foote
Gonchar

It should get very interesting in a year or two with guys like McCabe, Ohlund, Regehr, Leopold, Bouwmeester, Pitkanen and all these other young dmen working their way up. I wonder what a top 10 in 5-6 years might be like?

Pronger
Jovanovski
Bouwmeester
Regehr
Redden
Pitkanen
Leopold
Chara
Blake
Niedermayer

That's just a quick guess. I'm very interested to see what other people think.

In no order

Niedermayer
Lidstrom
Pronger
Blake
Gonchar
Chara
Jovanovski
Stevens
Schneider
Foote

It becomes hazy near the 8-10 spots but if I were asked to choose 10 d-men, those would be them. Hmm, put Zubov in there too.

The top 5 in the future would be

Pronger
Jovanovksi
Ohlund
Bouwmeester
Pitkanen

Leopold is very good , but he would be a top 4 on most team , I will never see him as a number 1 defence man with the likes of everyone up there

*Blake , Foote , Pronger , Neidermayer , Jovanovski , Ohlund*

All of them can play offence just like Leopold , but the thing that ALL of them can do , but Leopold cant is move big foward out of the crease area which is a big thing ...

If you have Jovocop on your list, you may as well put Ohlund there as well. At worst, Ohlund is just as good right now.

But , Jovanovski has been known to dominate games , while Ohlund is just very good . Jovanovski is having an off year should not take away his title as a top 10 dman in the league , I remember when Blake was a a youngster he had an absolutely terrible year , and everyone was saying trade him trade him , but then later on in his career he was known as one of the top D-men Jovanovski is a minature Blake is you think about it . Both can lay hugee bone crushing hits , both can play terrific offence , both have nice frames to lay the hits also .

Another reason why people , want Blake to play with Jovanovski so he can learn from him , and one day be like him which I think he will be .

Kim Johnsson is definately worthy of being mentioned in the top 10, here's how i'd rank them

1) Nik Lidstrom (not this year, but the past 5 he's the best)
2) Chris Pronger (getting back to form)
3) Scott Neidermayer (doesn't get enough credit, he's been this good for years)
4) Rob Blake (when healthy, he was prob. the best this year)
5) Zdeno Chara (this guy is a monster and I hate him)
6) Mattias Ohlund (just really really good)
7) Sergei Zubov (took a back seat to Hatcher, but was always better overall)
8) Wade Redden (just real solid, a lot like Ohlund)
9) Kim Johnsson (doesn't get the credit he deserves, he's getting better every year, and plays a lot like Neidermayer, just not quite as good)
10) Ed Jovanovski (consistency is just not there, too many mistakes to be top 5)

H.M. - Adam Foote, Sergei Gonchar, Brian Leetch, Matthew Schneider, and others

As for McCabe, he's a lot like Jovanovski, just a poor man's Eddy. He makes too many mistakes for my liking and I can't stand his butt checks ala Rob Blake.

I agree with that list. I'm not sure if Zubov should be up there anymore, though. Johnsson is definately much better than people give him credit for. And McCabe should not by any means be in the top 10. He's the most overrated defenseman right now.

Tarnstrom ? Zidlicky ?

Where would Tarnstrom and Zidlicky fit in as far as rankings ?

They'd be in top 20 wouldn't they ?
