OT: John Wooden

Coach Wooden is in grave condition at the moment. As NBA commissioner David Stern said, ""We hope he's in peace right now."

It's his time. He has lived a long and legendary life. Most would dream to have the impact in their own endeavors Coach Wooden has had on his and on the lives of people who have never met him.

When I was waiting tables a few years ago in Northridge, he was one of my regular customers. I remember one day right before Father's Day we struck up a conversation and he asked about my dad. He came back an hour later with a brand new basketball autographed and addressed to my dad. Wooden did that on his own for no reason other than he's great really nice and generous man.

Edit, here's a photo of the ball:

On a side note: I can't believe he'll be 100 years old in October.

That is a pretty awesome story If it is his time to go, at least he's left one hell of a legacy, and hopefully lived an extremely fulfilling life.

Coach Wooden is a pillar of excellence and a man of the highest values. His "pyrimad of success" is a blueprint for doing everything well and for maximizing one's potential. His self authored books are a must read. And as any person who has ever had interection with him will tell you, to know him is to feel that he has affected your life in a positive way.

My best wishes to Coach Wooden and his family at this difficult time.

Simply known as the coach, the man is an icon and I don't mean just in the sports world.

Horrible to hear.. I'm not a UCLA fan, but I'm a fan of the legends of all sports that I sadly never got to see/hear/meet (Wooden, Gowdy, Scully, Jack Buck, etc)

I actually was in Martinsville, IN last year, and got to see John Wooden gymnasium, a proper tribute for a proper gentleman

RIP To the Wizard of Westwood, simply THE Greatest coach of any sport, of all time

I had a ton of friends who went to UCLA in 1973 and 1974 who snuck me into the student section at Pauley - amazing times and amazing coach.

My favorite Wooden quotes:
"Learn as if you were to live forever; live as if you were to die tomorrow,"
"Don't give up on your dreams, or your dreams will give up on you,"
