Caps will pass on Volchenkov

ESPN reports that they won't pursuit Volchenkov. $5 Million is likely the asking price. Ottawa's still trying to get him back, but the chances are slim.

Quote:
It looks like the Washington Capitals might not sign Anton Volchenkov after all.

After reports that the Caps were ready to offer around $5 million a year to A-Train, the Washington Post reports that Volchenkov is not in the Caps' plans. Many speculated that this would be a nice fit for Volchenkov because of the several prominent Russian players on the Washington squad.

That might mean the Pittsburgh Penguins will get in on this, but as ESPN Insider's E.J. Hradek points out below, the Pens don't usually spend big money on blueliners. Plus, it depends on whether they can re-sign Sergei Gonchar.

Other suitors could include the New Jersey Devils (if they lose Paul Martin) and the St. Louis Blues (to play with Erik Johnson).

The Ottawa Senators are still trying to re-sign Volchenkov, but they can't give him the money he wants and it looks like A-train is ready to test the free-agent waters. So the Senators will try to keep another big blueliner, Andy Sutton, but the latest is that this UFA might also be too expensive for them.
discuss.

Wow. But they what they said about the Devils is kinda weird. Replacing Paul MArtin with Anton Volchenkov doesnt really make any sense...

Maybe Caps are just saying this to avoid the "tampering" situation. I still believe that they are the front runners

Kaberle not so much. Komisarek? Sure.

I'd take Bouchard, 3rd and a salary dump like Chimera for Komisarek.

The sharks should consider overpaying a bit to get him.

Asking price may get too big with Volchenkov... I could realistically see him north of $5.5 million as there should be quite a few teams willing to offer north of $5. Pavel Kubina or Dan Hamhuis?

I mean, those are really the only big minute stay-at-home guys on the market.....and teams that need one (of the top of my head)

-Washington
-Vancouver
-San Jose
-Atlanta
-Anaheim
-Los Angeles?
-Gotta be a couple more that I'm not thinking of aswell.

5 million on Volchenkov is insane. I like him and what he brings to the table but that kind of money should be for guys that can do what he does and be able to chip in 30-40 points a year

discuss.
I'd rather the Pens get an all-around guy like Martin over Volchenkov. Honestly I don't see them coughing up the $ required to get either to even listen.

Volchenkov scares me, he's a force defensively but his body just takes a beating. Investing in him over the next 5 years is a big risk and one that I'm on the fence about Pittsburgh taking (although they do have a clear need for elite help on the blueline).

I'm guessing that's sarcastic - the Caps (presidents trophy winners) don't have anything that the Leafs (29th in the league) are interested in. Has to be sarcastic.

I'll give you a pass though seeing as your a Dutch soccer fan - Hup Hup Holland

lol I was going to comment on this but thought I'd pass. Least both the Dutch and Leafs have one thing in common: they never win anything.
