Technically he's from Kazakhstan if you go by geography, but has been allowed to play for Russia in international competition.

Oh but I thought this was a done deal. You know, even though you can't talk to free agents at all before July 1st. It's amazing what people will believe.

Hey Volchenkov, we have a guy on the Habs who you would get along with very well. His name is Hal Gill.

If they don't sign Volchenkov, the Caps should trade for Regehr.

nah, Volchenkov won't be a Capital, as much as the supposedly perfect fit that he would be here, McPhee will not offer him a contract. He said it himself! "We are not going to offer that player a contract."

Caps are going to have to get some better defenders if they want to get out of the first round.

The Flames problably shouldn't trade Regehr (although Washington would have a few very nice pieces to offer -- specifically Semin & Alzner) unless they are intent on blowing it up. He's a good fit to make a top 4 of J-bo, Himself, White and Giordano.

Semin maybe, Alzner never. You guys need a goalie prospect? We got good ones.

I think four-ish million per season for 2 or 3 years would be on the high end, but then again, he or his agent haven't said anything about wanting to sign with a winning team. Solid player, but you can only make so much as a shutdown guy with little offensive skills, at least in contrast to other 5+ million dollar defensemen.

I, along with fans of 29 other teams, would be proud to have him in my teams jersey. Heaven forbid Mitchell is set to play, and resigns...I'd say the best shutdown pairing in the league, for as long as they can stay healthy anyway...

No considering they were playing a team with a so-so offence in Montreal, they DID give up too many goals. Remember also that what killed the Caps in that series was giving up the first goal(s) to Montreal -- Montreal scored first >> Halak took over >> Habs went on to win the game.
You might be right that Volchenkov might not be the best fit. But they desperately, desperately need that veteran blue-chip defenceman, be it a Regher, Hamhuis, or whatever.

Regehr for Semin straight up. I'd do it.

It's gone on record saying that Kaberle, at this point, is worth either a roster player (Fleischmann) or a first rounder. Nothing more, and not even BOTH of those.

I don't get how a team could simply decide on and decide against signing a player, before he's even available on the free market and their allowed to talk to him. They'll likely make him an offer at least.

Sure they are not interested if he's really looking for $5m. Too much salary.

You have to think the Kings would be interested in adding a guy like Volchenkov or Hamhuis during the offseason to continue on with a fresh mix of old and new on the blueline. However, I don't think Lombardi blows his load for Volchenkov at 5 mill. Not if we're realistically in the Marleau/Kovalchuk sweepstakes. We still have Doughty and Johnson to resign. I see DL adding a depth 15 minute guy like Seidenberg or a cheaper vet presence like Willie Mitchell far before Volchenkov at 5 mill.

why? simple, he is the next player to be involved in a blockbuster trade. To who? is yet to be determined. and it's only getting excited, especially for Leaf fans.

Him on the Blues would be weird, but good for them. Give them a mean tough SOB they haven't had since Pronger.

Just a tough SOB. Volchenkov doesn't really have a "mean" streak.

Um, have the Senators allowed other teams to talk to A-Train? Because...if not there's obviously some funny business going on, that a team is aware of another player's contract demands AND have the desire to pass.
