its been so long that I'm not sure of all the facts but...our goalie al smith squard off with picard.....i don't remember why....smithy through off his face mask and started throwing punches.....but with all his goalie equipment on, for every punch he would throw he would get hit with two by picard. the refs broke it up..... smith goes to the bench takes off his goalie pads and comes back out and fights him again....sadly the outcome was no different. r so he gets thrown out of the game...... 5-10 minuets late applause starts in a corner of the arena and starts to build, as fans realize that smithy had came into the arena in his street cloths to watch the game...he ended up getting a standing o.

The Rangers were blowing out the Pens and Tony Granato had 4 goals. All I remembr is that they were pouring in on and taking runs at the Pens. All of a sudden Lemieux gets the puck on the left side of the ice and Shaw hits him... maybe slightly late. The two circle, meet at the top of the left circle, Lemieux cross checks Shaw in the upper arms and Shaw comes down with an ax like swing hitting Lemieux in the helmet and upper chest. Mario went down like he's been shot and Dan Quinn (of all people) goes after Shaw. He gets beat down pretty bad but as Shaw is being escorted off the ice the Pens bench tries getting at him and the police had to hold them back.

I've always hated the Rangers but that just added more fuel to the fire. Its on Youtube somewhere but I don't even want to see that team. I'll always thank god for that mid 90's stike so I didn't have to watch the Rangers put up their banner. (They were supposed to open against the Pens that year)
i had steve dykstra as a cult hero when that happened and after the game he said they were going to kill shaw

also kicked the crap out of a NYR fan i got into a fight with talking about the

That has to be the game after watching the video... I rem it was the early to late 80s, agt. a NY team and Pens players going after the guy in the box and we have:

'88, Rangers, dirty slash on Lemieux and Pens players going through the penalty box to get to Shaw (funny ass **** there).

Has to be it - thx guys that has always been on my "want to know" list.

There are actually a few that I remember. Another had Cary Wilson sticking Lemieux between the eyebrows and opening a large cut. Jim Kyte went crazy and Sam Rosen was screaming "get that jerk off the ice".

Another was when John Ogradnik ?spelling? gave a Graves type swing to Robbie Browns head and hit him in the ear. Everyone got into it then and I can remember Jonny Cullen standing with Tomas Sandstrom... his fist cocked back and Sandstroms jersey over his head.

Just to get back to that Shaw chop. Does anyone remember Mario then next time he played the Rangers? He had 4 assists, hit everything in site and got 2 shots off while sliding on the ice. Lemieux in rage mode was downright frightening to watch.

I didn't know that. That's a good question. Who are the top undrafted players who are playing in the NHL now and also from the past. Right now I know St. Louis was undrafted. I really hope the Pen's invite some undrafted players to camp.

By the way, didn't have time to post it before but here's the Wregget-Buskas fight. You were probably thinking of Bourque because he was the other guy who jumped in on that square-off and turned it into a pile. Or was it Stevens? Can't tell with all the flying bodies lol

And in honor of the newest Stanley Cup Champs and JR's emotional post-game comments, here's my favorite Pens-Hawks ugliness.

Whats the date on that? I remember Ron Francis getting a few games for coming off the bench. That might have been it as he was throwing punches from the bench.

Must have been 92-93 because Tippett is there and he was only a Pen for that one season.

Bumping this looking for some help.

Does anyone have a date on the Penguins/ Red Army game in 89? Looked at a few sites but couldn't find much.

Nothing but respect for the guy. You're not a Pittsburgher if you don't like the the 'ol 29er... he's all class and a great down to earth guy.

I wish everyone could experience something like that. Its something I'll never forget.

I'll tell you the whole story one day TD...

Absolutely. I look forward to it. I think I heard bits and pieces of it one time, but not in it's entirety.

And I agree, you gotta love the 'ol two niner. They only time I really get to hear him is when he joins the post game show as a guest and I am listening to it driving home from the game. And when at home and watching, I really wish it was easy on the tv side to synch up with the radio feed. But alas it is not.
