Rissanen-Kivistö

Aittokallio
Ortio

I would go something like this.
No sense in putting two rightys in one pairing, other than maybe powerplay and even then Hakanpää might play in front of the goal. Also, considering Kivistö's one of the most experienced of our dmen, he's not going to play on the 3rd pairing. Here's how I'd put those:

Kivistö-Vatanen
Manelius-Hakanpää
Rissanen-Jokipakka

I'm intrigued by Kivisto. Any chance the kid makes it to the NHL?

well it's looking more likely now than after his year at Red Deer.

Impossible to predict the lines at the moment. We are very strong on the wings, with candidates like Rajala, Pulkkinen, Haula, Salomäki, Donskoi, Junttila, Partanen can all play in top6 role. Centers are suprisingly our weakest link: Granlund, Nättinen, Salmivirta, Ma.Granlund?

I mean, Finland always has good players for the 3rd+4th lines, but we are definately missing the other skilled 2nd line center. And as I´ve seen Mikael Granlund play center this season.. He has struggled big time in defensive zone, as he struggled in the WJC last year. Not a good situation. Nättinen and Salmivirta are perfect centers for 3rd+4th lines. So one winger has to move to center the 2nd line, I assume it will be Haula.

I´ll give it a go:

Rajala-Granlund-Pulkkinen
Salomäki-Haula-Donskoi
Partanen-Nättinen-Pakarinen
Mankinen-Salmivirta-Tallberg? (dont have a clue on this one)

Armia, Ma Granlund and Junttila will fight for the last spot.

D-men are fairly well predicted in the previous posts.

As a conclusion we are weak on center, very skilled but undersized on the wing and good in the 3rd+4th lines as usual.

Defense is somewhat experienced, skilled but lacks size and grit.

Goalies are ustable and fairly weak. No sure-fire #1 goalie, who plays regular in Sm-league.

Pretty hard to see Finland fighting for medals this year either, unfortunately.

I actually like those lines. Armia/Santavuori has worked so well in the Sm-Liiga, so I have no doubts, that it wouldnt work with Rajala+Haula. 1st line is also worth of trying. Nättinen on the other hand... I just dont see the point of him being in the team. He has been injured for a while, and when is he coming back? December? Salmivirta will definately fill the shoes of the 3rd line center. I´m not totally sure of Junttila playing in 3rd line, Donskoi or Pakarinen would be better fit IMO.

Markus Granlund seems to be the player who will be left out of the team, of the trio Armia,Granlund and Salomäki. Salomäki can provide checking role in the 3rd line, Markus cant. Armia has been super-impressive in the Sm-liiga, I think he is a lock for the team.

Defence looks good too. Jokipakka has really impressed me in the last games, happy to have him on the team. Ortio and Aittokallio should get much more games under their belt. We desperately need a good starting goalie to the WJC. Ortio has looked good in two TPS games this season, sadly the rest of the team sucks major horse **** and it isnt helping Ortio´s play.

But we will see, a lot can change in two months, thats for sure. I just hope no one gets injured, we cannot afford that.

The tournament will be played in North America, it’s important to have some size in the centre forward position, especially because Granlund and Haula are fairly smallish players. The team will have a lot of skill in its wings, but there’s also a dire need for balancing/stabilising players, that’s where I think Nättinen will prove his value. Nättinen has a lot of experience, is strong in face-offs, and has a decent two-way game. IMO he would be one of the most important players for the team, if healthy.

Nättinen should be match fit in early December which would leave enough time for him to get ready for the WJC’s. As far as Salmivirta is concerned, he’s a decent player in his own right, but isn’t on Nättinen’s level, at least not yet. Same goes for Henri Tuominen.

Last Sunday I saw the K-Laser – FINU20 match where Salmivirta, Tuominen, Ma. Granlund and Palve played. I think that Salmivirta and Tuominen are the best alternatives for the 4th line centre forward role. Markus Granlund might make the team, if some of the top guys are injured and there’s a need for his playmaking skills. I’m just not sure how he would fare defensively as a centre forward against top competition. Even Mikael Granlund might have some problems coping against Canada and USA, and Markus is slower and weaker than his brother. Oula Palve is an interesting player and could very well be on the team next year.

One thing to remember is that the coaching staff might be forced to select 5 centre forwards to the team, since many of the wingers have no experience of playing in that position and there could always be injuries during the tournament. Salomäki played most of the last season as a centre forward, so he could be one of the emergency alternatives for the centre forward position.

There might be better alternatives to 3rd line than Junttila, that’s for sure. As far as Donskoi is concerned, I think he’ll be a 1st or 2nd line player, he has been really good so far this season.

I agree. What’s encouraging is that he has looked strong on even strength. He’s not that dependent on power play time and creates scoring chances for himself and his line mates in all situations. Also he has a good physical presence considering his age, certainly not afraid of going to the net.

Haven’t seen Jokipakka so far this season, so I can’t comment on him. Overall the defensive crop doesn’t appear to be as strong as the offensive one and it’s really important that the top guys stay healthy.

Agreed. Apparently Ortio is still doing his military service in Lahti, which can’t help his training and preparation to the WJC’s. Pakarinen and Nättinen should be there as well.

It wouldn’t be that big of a disaster if one of the wingers got injured since there’s quite a lot of depth there. If one of the centre forwards (Mi. Granlund, Haula and Nättinen) or one of the defensemen (Vatanen, Kivistö and Rissanen) can’t attend, it would hurt the team a lot.

Jere Sallinen has borned 1990-10-26 so he can't play on WJC and Nättinen will play on center, that's for sure.

Here's my lineups

Rajala-Granlund-Pulkkinen
Donskoi-Haula-Armia
Junttila-Nättinen-Pakarinen
Turtiainen-Tuominen-Tallberg
Salomäki

Kivistö-Vatanen
Jokipakka-Rissanen
Hakanpää-Aaltonen
Kärmeniemi

Ortio/Aittokallio/Gibson

It's hard to say who will be the number one because I am pretty sure that Gibson will have a chance in the camp before the main tournament. Gibson is the only one who plays in the small rink and he has been amazing in the QMJHL so he might surprise. Ortio and Aittokallio haven't been that impressive in this year.

Partanen wont be in the team if he doesn't make better in OHL.

He's playing on the first line of HIFK today, in place of brother Mikael.

Yep, I just read that too... Let's hope that he performs well. I like Granlund brothers and I really hope that Markus will be also selected to the WJC but he hasn't been so dominant in the jr A this far.. I personally thought before the season that he would tear up jr A.. Fact is though that HIFK jr A team has weakened a lot and Markus had much better linemates last season.

Markus Granlund should put to the K-Vantaa. Mestis would be right place to develop for him. He also might better chance to make it to the WJC team, like Eero Elo last year. He played something like 10 game in the Mestis and he got in to the team.

My take judging by what we've seen so far:

Ortio (Aittokallio)

Kivistö - Vatanen
Rissanen - Jokipakka
Manelius - Hakanpää
Kärmeniemi

Rajala - Granlund - Pulkkinen
Donskoi - Nättinen - Junttila
Piitulainen - Haula - Armia
Pakarinen - Tuominen - Turtiainen
Salmivirta

The goalies are the "safe picks". Chris Gibson makes an interesting case for himself, but knowing how the Finnish NT scouting works with the NA leagues other than the Big One, I'm not holding my breath.

D is certainly better than it's been in a while. Vatanen, Kivistö and Jokipakka are certain picks for top 4 and I just tried to put the rest together judging after offensive/defensive qualities.

On offense, we finally can have three strong scoring lines. I know that the U18 top line from couple of years back is a bit on the smallish side, but in case you haven't noticed, Donskoi and Junttila are constantly playing together in Kärpät 2nd line. Unless they're suddenly broken up for a long term, I see no reason why Marjamäki shouldn't make good of this advantage (or at least try to do so). 3rd line is more or less "rest of the best" slapped together. 4th line is the standard defensive unit. On Tuominen/Salmivirta debate I ended up picking Tuominen since he's a regular in that role in SM-liiga - something that Salmivirta isn't.

Last year, Elo was a sizable 6'3 19-year-old fully suited physically for men's games. Ma.Granlund is 17 now, 5'9 and still growing. They're not really comparable.

According to Jatkoaika posters watching HIFK-Kärpät, Markus Granlund's skating is a lot better than Mikael's. I recall a certain poster here stating otherwise.

Never believe anything said in Jatkoaika, especially in HIFK section of it.

But as Tormentor has stated before, MA.G is not as FAST skater as his brother.
And to be honest he's behind MI.G in almost every aspect of his game.
(I mean Mikael was at his age)

I watched the game as well, not a bad first game for Markus in SM-liiga, but I think that he’s not ready to be a regular at this level yet, especially on a strong team like HIFK. IMO Mestis would be a good level for his development at the moment.

Markus and Mikael are built slightly differently and there’s still a clear difference in their physiques. Mikael is heavier, stronger and IMO has more thrust in his skating. Therefore he has a clear advantage in traffic. Markus is lighter, perhaps a bit more agile and his skating looks prettier, but I think that he’s still searching for the highest gear from his gearbox. Gaining more explosiveness and separation speed would benefit him greatly.

Markus is a smart player offensively; high creativity and flair, good anticipation and decision making. He has many characteristics of a good playmaker. Some might hope for a higher level of competitiveness, but let’s see if it improves once his conditioning gets better.

Which one fits better as a centerman? As we've seen, Mikael has struggled a bit in the middle this season, how was Markus as a center in the Sm-liiga? I mean defensive awareness etc.

I think it's pretty early to say that after just one game.

Hard to judge Markus’ readiness solely to defensive play at SM-liiga level based on tonight’s game, since he didn’t get that much ice time and Kärpät was unable to create much offence in the first two periods. Would be interesting to see Markus play centre forward against some of the tougher teams in SM-liiga, it would truly force him out of his comfort zone. It might also answer the question whether he’s ready to play in a contributing role at the WJC’s.

If you think about the two-way game of a centre forward, I think that Mikael is a better alternative since he has a more comprehensive perspective of the game and wants to take part to everything that happens on the ice. Markus on the other hand is a bit more cautious and his level of involvement is lower.
