Your opinions: Flyers best 2 D-men

In Kevin Allen's USA TODAY column (Monday 5-17-04) he said the Flyers are without their best two d-men Eric Desjardins and Marcus Ragnarsson. Do you agree? I would have put Kim Johnsson as a top two.

I would also say, might catch flak for it, that Malakov and Markov have played equal or better then Rags, thats not saying anything negative to Rags.

...I think Johnsson is definately #1. He had a very good regular season and was leading all NHL dmen in pnts before his injury.

I'd rank KJ #1 and Markov at #2.

Johnsson and Markov are Phillys 1 and 2. Desjardins is 3 and I think Ragnarsson is overrated, but still a solid 4. Malakhov's solid play should move him up though.

I think Rags is under rated, but Kim is definilty number one. Timmander, what a steal he was, hope he sticks around

overall the #1 defensman is markov. he's there on both sides of the ice, i think he's our best player in the defensive zone.

#2 is either malakhov or johnsson...malakhov has been physically involved in every game, johnsson is still incredible, despite being tentative at times after the hand injury.

No Not Ragnarsson.

You could of argued that Desjardins was our #2 defensman behind Kim Johnsson in the regular season, before his arm injury--but Desjardins has not been a part of the playoff equation and doesn't really doesn't require mentioning in this article.

Slightly off topic question - Malakhov was rumored to be retiring following this season. Do you think he will, or do you think he'll return to play another season for Philly? I suppose if there's a lockout he's definitely gone, so assume there isn't.

When everyone is healthy:

1A. Desjardins
1B. Johnsson
3. Ragnarsson
4. Malakhov (based on his playoff)
5. Markov
6. Timander
7. Pitkanen

Over the long haul I would flip/flop Markov and Malakhov and also Timander and Pitkanen.

When our defense is 100%, sure Timander is 6 or 7, but he's definitely proven his value to this team, great pickup

That is hard to say. My perspective is that Malakhov's lackluster play with the Rangers was due mostly to the fact that he had nothing to play for, but the regular season. Now that he is deep into the playoffs, he is playing some of his best hockey in years. If there is no lockout, and judging by the way he has turned his game around recently and being on a good team, I would say he'll return.

this is how I would rank then too.

Desjardins was playing great hockey when he was injured. It would be great if he was available because of the way he was playing, experience and the minutes he could log.

Yeah, that's the impression I've got too, but he is getting on in years.
Malakhov is playing his best hockey since the 2000 cup run. He's finally looking like the defenseman I liked and hated to see leave after the win.

The thing about Rags is he is doing is job if you don't notice him. Over the whole playoffs up until his injury I considered him to be our best defensemen. Of course this would have been different if Johnsson had not broke his hand. Rags has the best outlet pass on the team IMO and he has been more than solid in his own zone and he stepped up physically as well. He was getting the most minutes too. Over the whole playoffs here is where i'd rank our defensemen.

1. Ragnarsson
2. Malakhov
3. Markov
4. Kapanen
5. Johnsson (hasn't been the same since breaking his hand)
6. Timmander
7. Pitkanen

yeah, malakhov appears rejuvenated and motivated for sure. I certainly wasn't happy when he was our deadline day acquisition--his play for the Rangers over the last few seasons was terrible from what I had seen. But he has definitely proven his worth.

When Johnsson is healthy, he's clearly the #1 defenseman on this team and a true #1 in the league, imo. If this flyers d-core was ever healthy, they'd have the ability to be really really good. Here's how I would rank them when they are all healthy

1) Kim Johnsson (a true #1 at both ends)
2) Danny Markov (his play rises in the playoffs, he's a true warrior)
3) Eric Desjardins (not as good as he once was, but still a good #2 on most teams)
4a) Vlad Malikhov (playing unbelievably, he can be a top 2 defenseman when he wants and since he's arrived in philly, he has wanted to be)
5b) Marcus Ragnarrson (he's as solid as they come and had a tremendous playoffs, he's underrated imo and a real solid #3)
6) Timander/Pitkanen (it depends on the series, a healthy and rested Joni is a heck of a defenseman as we saw the first 50 games of the season)

The great thing about this D-core, when healthy, is that the top 5 guys could all play in a top pairing and play over 25 minutes a night. I just wish we got to see the whole core together for a series.

Great post and I agree.
Others have Markov far down the list when he is a 2/3 guy for sure. I would take six of him on my blue line and never lose a series.

Johnsson is still the number 1 IMO, Malakhov number 2 though. 28:33 in game 4 i believe.
