Semin is UFA after next year and will have a 6M cap hit that we cannot afford without dumping some salary or having a weak team.
That and he was poor in the playoffs and weighs like 170 pounds soaking wet.
Yes, sure he is a pure sniper with a ridiculous shot...playing in the SE division of the Eastern conference. Our GM has stressed that the team needs more size, grit, and veteran players who have been in the playoffs before. Semin does not fit this mold.
Honestly the only POSSIBLE players I'd like to get from Washington are Karl Alzner and/or John Carlson. And it is extremely doubtful either would move. Washington and Vancouver are very identical teams in structure looking for the same things. Semin does not make our team better at his cost (in players and salary). Now if Washington is interested in a Schroeder + a pick for Alzner then I'm all in this proposal doesn't help Vancouver at all.
Suppose by some wierd conflux of planets we did land Semin. Gillis could hold out for an awesome return at the deadline. In the meantime we might get some use out of Shirokov.
I think if manna falls from heaven you should accept gratefully. Especially since Gillis doesn't do trades in general and never trades prospects specifically.
So, if Washington phones up trying to dump Semin, yeah, I'd take him.
4th round pick (115)
Absolutely not, from a Canuck fan POV.
The Canucks have historically had a pretty bare prospect cupboard, and this proposal would see us give up our two top flight prospects in exchange for an admittedly talented forward who pulls a disappearing act in the playoffs.
Ignoring the cap implications and that you win in the modern NHL with young players on low contracts, I don't think Semin is a piece that is going to put Vancouver over the top, and that's before Gustafsson even enters the equation. No thank you.
If Semin was a proven playoff performer and we wanted to go for it all next season then it might be something you consider. But he's exactly what we don't need to get past the second round. We would potentially be a better regular season team for one season with this trade, but that's about it.
