Depends on who your cell phone provider is. I know that right now with Fido, if you're on a three year contract you can upgrade with 420 days left in it.

The one from Dell I like is the Flash, and it has a pretty nice screen and based on the photo, a front facing camera.

It reminds me a bit of my first real MP3 player, which was the Dell DJ. I always thought it was a gorgeous device at a time of cheap plastics.

Video call is real "now"?

Now as in, years ago? Video call was real a long time ago, and over the network, not wifi

Yeah that's the kind of stuff the turns me off about Apple. Like when they talk about their products as "Magical"? I mean what did it fall out of the sky in a unicorn drawn carriage?

Video calling was tried many times by North American carriers (remember the Rogers commercial with the guy showing his GF the sanitary pad and tampon section so she could choose one).

But yet he demoes it a WWDC, talks about the Jetsons and how futuristic it is then says "It's finally here!"

Are you serious?

Uhh, isn't that kind of the point? It's been tried and it's been half baked a huge flop. I understand Apple's point; someone is actually going to make it successful. But of course the ironic part is that it's still not real yet because the networks can't support it.

It hasnt been half baked before. Apples attempt certainly is.

You can make video calls on your wifi network...you know...where you have a computer....with a webcam.....

It wasn't half-baked nor did Apple bring anything new to the table.

In fact Europe and Asia had video calling years ago. Almost all consumer aimed Nokia devices have front facing cameras.

It just never caught on in NA.

If it wasn't half-baked (in NA), why didn't it catch on here? You don't think Apple implementing it will bring it to the main stage in NA?

Okay let me flip your logic on it's head.
If it was half-baked (because the concept is identical from NA to EU to Asia) why is it successful in Europe and Asia?

Because people in NA didn't want it.

But I do think it will bring it to the main stage. Now that Apple has it, people will for some unknown reason want it now, and believe they invented it.

A little bit bias toward Android but still an interesting read:

Pretty much sums up how I feel about the "groundbreaking features"

You can see why FaceTime wont work on 3G... Or why AT&T doesn't want it to.

If it freezes up that badly on wifi thats crowded, imagine it on the AT&T network.

And seriously, saying that video calling is "real now" when it works only on WiFi is ****ing stupid. It's worked on WiFi for a long time.

The concept wasn't half baked, the implementation was half baked.

It's weird, because I think we are in complete agreement. You are offended by Apple taking credit for it (fair point), but as you recognize, it will be Apple who really brings it to the forefront in NA.

It's not much different than texting, which was popular in EU and Asia long before it made it caught on in NA, and it seemed to take some innovations (eg qwerty keyboards, smart phones) to really gain traction here.

Haha, yeah any emphasis on contrast ratio is usually a good sign of bias. Some good points, but I found this piece (by an Android user) a lot more balanced.

Honestly, for the non-tech head? The features that Apple is putting in the new phone are pretty cool when you consider how mainstream of a device it is.

My preference is still Android, but it's good to see Apple continue to raise the bar for baseline smartphones and forces the "superphones" to be that more innovative / cutting edge.

I'm sure it'll be another huge success for Apple, and it'll be good to see all of the other phones scramble to implement these features.

Plus one for FaceTime being an open protocol.

The marketing is hilarious, of course, but... it's marketing. They're out to make money and generate attraction to their product.

All that shows is that Apple half assed it. Video on my N95 2 years ago was fine, and that was on Rogers network, not wifi.

Rogers network 2 years ago is nothing like the AT&T network today. Not even close.

As you said though, even on wifi it was choppy as hell. Networks have nothing to do with it.

It was choppy on wifi because there was still a ton of interference.

That's what I was getting at. If 500 wifi base stations cause that much trouble with their FaceTime on WiFi imagine how ****ed up that would cause AT&Ts network to be.

How often did you use video calling on your N95 2 years ago?

I used the 50 minutes included in my monthly plan.
