Worst athlete in NHL history?

Just a funny thought in light of the recent "best athlete" thread.

The "worst goalie ever" thread produced some real gems. Surely there were some equally horrendous skaters from time to time. Guys that were out of shape, slow, untalented, etc. ...

Are we differentiating between "worst athlete" and "worst player"? In either case it's probably either a goon who got a cup of coffee with a big club or someone who got a cup of coffee in the NHL during the war years.

I'll go with Richard Zemlak. I've seen him throw his gloves off to fight and then fall over them.

I assume your not looking for the worst NHLer but the worst athletic shape, or most poorly conditioned NHLer.

Vladimir Krutov showed up for the NHL in horrendous shape, I guess he figured his status in Russia would translate to similar NHL good fortunes. Not exactly, judging from the nicknames he got ... Vladimir Crouton and Vlad the Inhaler.

Hell, half the guys in the 70's weren't exactly 'athletic' hockey players, lol.

Was going to mention him.
A below average physical specimen for a NHL player even in his day.

Quite amazing how his dominance more or less all came down to what is in his head.

Billy Nicholson played from 1901 to 1917. He was a goalie who stood 5'7" and weighed as much as 300 lbs.

Didn't Turk Broda have a bit of a weight problem? I remember reading something where the Leafs forced him to lose about ten or twenty pounds during one offseason.

Gump Worsley may have been the most Pillsbury doughboy looking HOFer I've seen. Great goalie though.

Historically, I would think goalies were the most out of shape NHLers on average.

First name I thought of too. He had it written in his contract that he could have a beer in between periods. Still won a pair of Cups though, but wildly out of shape. His idea of getting in shape was wearing a wet suit and driving in the middle of the summer with the heat on to lose weight.

Another name that comes up is Chris Dingman. Of course I would keep this just to hockey in general. Maybe because of his size he excels at other sports but in hockey he was as slow as molasses and could barely stand up straight.

Tubby McAuley?

Phil Esposito, anyone? His brother Tony didn't exactly look like a great athlete, either...

Internationally, the mid/late-70s Vlado Dzurilla looked quite pudgy, to say the least. Holecek and Dzurilla = Laurel and Hardy

Dingman also won a pair of Cups, if you'll recall

Yes he did, with the 2001 Avs and 2004 Lightning. In those two Cup victories he played a total of 39 games and registered 1 goal and 5 assists. Hmmmmm.

While Gretzky's physique is incredibly underwhelming in proportion to his accomplishments, he was also a very good baseball and lacrosse player in his youth.

I gotta agree with MonzaSpyder...

Krutov takes the cake (and eats it).

Still mad about that. At the time he was supposed to be the best Russian player available... or at least, the one who's game was going to translate into the NHL the best.

Still wish that Andrei Medvedev had gotten a cup of coffee at the NHL level, then we'd have an undisputed champion here.
