Wild Forum NHL Fantasy Draft Game

Well, I mentioned this in the Off-Topic Thread and thought I'd make a new thread to see if the Wild fans we have here would be interested in this game.

Ideally, I'd like to have at least 8 or more teams participating in this game to make it more interesting. Here are some basic parameters to the game.
  • Draft will be 20 Rounds long.
  • Teams will consist of 12 Forwards, 6 Defensemen, and 2 Goaltenders.
  • We will be using a salary cap and each team must stay under it. We will determine the exact number before the draft begins.
  • Only players on professional contracts are eligible to be drafted.
  • Draft will be conducted in a snake order.
  • Each team will have a predetermined time window to make their selection.
  • Windows will close overnight so you don't need to worry about a missed selection during that time period.
  • If you know you won't be able to make your pick in the time window, you can send in a big board.

From there, I'll leave it up to the guys willing to participate on how far we want to take. We could set up a playoff bracket and vote on which team would win in each situation. I could make a winning avatar for the winner or something. Perhaps even dig this back up during different points during the season and re-vote. We could even enter the teams into a sports simulator. Doesn't matter to me.

If you want to participate, post so in this thread. If we get enough people interested, we'll move along further and begin. If you've got ideas on how to make this more interesting, questions, or preferences; post those as well.

Is there a program that has the player database, salaries, etc. that allows trades? I play the NHL EHM sim a lot but have never done a fantasy draft so I'm a noob.

I'd be really interested in this, running them through a simulator would be cool too. Random draft order I presume?

That's the plan. We'll have to see if this fills out, though. So far we're just at the people who have shown interest so far. We'll need at least 8 to make it worth while, I think.

I'll play. And it's 20 rounds because our teams will have 20 players. Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not...

I'll play as well. I'll warn you guys, I played fantasy for the first time this year and did three teams... I got two firsts and a second... However, it was Yahoo, so I'm going to expect to play with smarter people, and being that all of them (?) will be from Minnesota, they'll probably have better hockey minds than most. Count me in.

Jocksta18 ????

As we sit, we've got a good number of people willing to play. I'm not sure if Jocksta said he wanted to play but if you do Jocksta, we'll get one more player to even it out.

Since we're close to starting, what would you guys like to run for a working cap? Something close to the NHL's $58 million?

The smaller the cap we've got to work with, the more challenging the draft will be. So we'll leave that up to discussion.

What kind of salaries are we going to be using for the cap hits? 09-10s?

Yes. I think that would have to be the route we take given there will be a few players not under new contracts.

So guys with low salaries and high level of play are going to be big pickups. I'm fine with the cap anywhere.

Personally I'd prefer not to do a cap... Having a cap would change the game entirely. Stamkos' ELC would probably get picked up before Crosby's $8.?/year contract. This would require to much thinking, analyzing and evaluating for me during these summer times. I'm a college student and look forward to the summers because of the lack of this. I'll still partake, but I'm prepared to get dominated if we have a cap to work with.

Even though I want to, I shouldn't. I won't have enough time here shortly and I don't want to be one of those players that joins and then never is around for trades, roster changes, etc.

I think I'm just going to kill this idea for now guys.

I just believe that we may run into some problems and this probably isn't the best of times to start it.

I think just prior to the season would be a better time to bring this back up. Hopefully by then we've got an even more established base of Wild fans here. We'd also have updated contract situations and people may be more active here just in general.

Maybe come mid-September we can do this on a Yahoo or some other sports fantasy site so it scores automatically for us? That way it would be a real fantasy league where we'd play with people we semi-know (none of my friends play fantasy hockey.. Only football or baseball) and then the situational discussions can be saved for these boards. Are there leagues/sites where the cap comes into account when drafting?
