Michalek Possibility

I was just wondering what is going to happen with Z. I would like to resign him, but it seems like he wants to play with his brother in Ottawa. So I was wondering what you think the possibility of a sign and trade. I was thinking:

To Ottawa:
A signed Zebnyk Michalek
Mikkel Boedker
3rd Round Pick 2010

To Phoenix:
Jason Spezza

What do you think?

He is a free agent. He isnt going to sign. From his out interview on Coyotes.com he is going to see what is out there. I dont think he is coming back. If you want to look at it this way, trade pick # 13 for Spezza. Z will make atleast 4.5 mil. So it would only be like adding another 3 mil for an elite playe like Spezza.

I doubt that very much.

I wouldn't....Free agency allows you to go after guys without giving up assets (other than cash) but it also has a tendency to inflate the price of someone. When you go into FA, you are most likely going to pay more than you want to for a player. Then again, GMDM has found a way around that somehow.

Four million per year would represent a pretty inflated value, to me. Four and a half would be the absolute maximum. I really can't see it. To say "at least" is crazy to me. All you need to do is look at recent deals given to similar players. There just aren't defensemen like Michalek making five million a year.

If Volchenkov gets the money that he wants Michalek's price will most certainly go up.

He will get 4.5 at a minimum. He is that valuable to a team. The Rangers might offer him 9 million.

I think Ekland had an E5 that the KHL offered a 50 year $100 mil per year tax free with NMC but Michalek said he only wanted to play in Canada.

Look at Mitchell, Regher, Phillips, etc. These are the league's premiere shut-down defensemen. None make that much. All bring not only reliability but a physical presence and vocal leadership. Please look around the league and actually price Z.

A little rich I think. $3.5 is where I think he'll wind up.

I'm sorry, you guys are just not bothering to actually have a look at how similar players are actually compensated. If you did, you would understand that 4.5 MINIMUM is very, very doubtful.

I would argue that comparing Zidlicky and Michalek isn't realistic. Quiet, steady, defensive defencemen rarely get big money. It's just the way it goes, and Michalek is your prototypical quiet, steady, defensive defenceman. He's young so I think he will wind up getting a nice, long contract from someone. Likely 5 - 6 years at $3.0 - $3.5 million I would guess.

Seidenberg is about the best comparison you can make to Z.

He just signed for 4 yrs/$13M

That's about what should be expected if Z signs with the Coyotes.

If with Another team after free agency frenzy starts...maybe 4 yrs/$15M

teams all over the league are running into cap problems....eventually GM's will learn not to overpay....GM's beside Sather at least.

I understand what you are saying but free agency inflates players' prices...Idk maybe I just think that because I'm a Rangers fan too and Sather has inflated alot of people's prices.

Willie Mitchell was UFA. He didn't get that kind of cash. He was much more highly regarded, at that time, than Michalek is now.

Mitchell got $3.5M per season over 4 years and reportedly took a discount to come to Vancouver as well.

I think I read that the Blues offered him around $4M per season.

Let's also not forget that the cap was a lot lower when Mitchell signed in the summer of 2006.

IIRC the cap was around $44M that summer.

Friedman also reported a few weeks ago that Michalek was looking for around $4M per season.
