Nintendo to Apple: We still own mobile gaming (well, possibly)

Developers are reporting the 3DS will have power similar to that of the PS3 and 360!

Two points:

1) "Regain control"? Has the article writer taken a look at DS sales totals recently? It's on track to surpass the PS2 in a few months as the best-selling video game system of all-time. Also keep in mind that most people who buy an iPhone or iTouch are not using it as a video game system.

2) Nintendo hasn't needed superior hardware specs to decimate the PSP, so it's questionable reasoning overall. The video game industry isn't like the smartphone industry. Often the platform with the best hardware doesn't win the sales battle.

It's Tom's Hardware... they've been considered less than stellar for several years now.

More like pretty much Always.

Keep in mind that the actual systems power and it's graphical output are not necessarily tied together in the case of the 3DS. Because of the 3D effect, it has to render everything twice and it's a big drain on processing power.

It would have to far exceed the Wii in technical specifications to put out GameCube or near GameCube level visuals.

Plus, it will have two screens and we don't know yet if there will be a secondary processor in the unit like there is in the DS, so it might be also powering both.

I'm interested either way.

Also, apparently there will be a slider toggle on the side of the unit to turn off and turn on the 3D effect as you chose and at least one joystick.

Yeah, that's the point.

Other factors than raw hardware specs often determine sales in the video game industry. Such as price, accessibility, form factor, game library, etc.

Part of the reason that the gaming media back in 2006 was so foolish to prematurely crown the PS3 the inevitable winner of this generation of consoles. They were basing their predictions on nothing but hardware specs.

They didn't win their Generation.

The PS2 outsold the Xbox1 even though the Xbox1 was more powerful.

The Wii outsold the PS3 even though the PS3 was more powerful.

Xbox got beat by the PS2, and PS3 has less units sold than the 360...

As someone who was fully in love with GameBoy Color and Advance, this generation of hand helds just seems so...suck. It might just be because I'm older now though.

When I move to University I'm still taking my PSP and DS and I will try to get more use out of them (same with my Wii). But aside from Golden Sun I honestly don't know what game will make me go play handheld.

What resolution would it even be running at? I don't do mobile gaming, so I'm just going by Wikipedia, but it says the original DS ran at 256x192. If the 3DS runs at that, and has to render twice, that still doesn't exactly take a vast amount of graphical power - that's pretty anemic. Is the 3DS going to be running a larger resolution? Not saying, just asking.
