I like Martin a lot as a player but at the same time I think he's going to get more money than he's actually worth on the FA market. And $5.5 is just too much.
It's going to be a similar situation to the Wild signing Kim Johnsson to his deal. You're going to like the guy a lot as a reliable defenseman but for the money he's going to be signed at, it's going to leave you wanting more from him on the offensive side of the game. Personally, if I'm going to sign a defenseman to that type of contract, I want him to be able to chip in offensively on a fairly consistant basis in addition to playing a sound defensive game.
(If you actually compare both Johnsson and Martin, their games and scary similar.)
As for Barker, I'm just at the point where I don't know what we have in him yet. I'm willing to give him a good portion of next year to see what he can really bring. But at this point, there's not a whole lot to be excited about. Hopefully they can find a role for him to play effectively. I'd like to see a little more PP time but with Zidlicky and Burns in the mix, it may be tough for him to fit in much.
i like martin and i'm very on-the-fence about Barker, but I'd pick barker. If we hadn't overpaid Zidlicky so grossly I wouldn't mind the swap, but IMO the difference in Barker and Martin's salaries would go further spent on a top six forward.
