Vesa Toskala

The Calgary Flames will have a new back-up for Miikka Kiprusoff next season.

Calgary Flames general manager Darryl Sutter, in a wide-ranging interview with The Fan 960 on Wednesday, said Vesa Toskala will not be back in a Flames uniform in 2010-11. The Finnish netminder is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

"Vesa made it very clear that he wanted to be a one or 1A in the league," said Sutter.

With Toskala out ether Darryl will sign or trade for another back-up which has worked so well for him in the past NOT soo now this gives ether Leland Irving, Matt Keetley or David Shantz an opportunity.

Keetley was 10-7-1, Irving was 13-17-2 and Shantz 14-10-3 in the minors so i guess my choice would be ether Keetley or Shantz( he looked not to bad in pre season )

so now the big questions are What team does Toskala best fit into the #1 or #1a role? and How much is a team willing to pay for him?

I liked his play and I would have liked to see him back in the fold, but we can't afford the luxury. I'd expect promotion from within, likely Irving to take over as the backup.

As for Toskala, I could see him doing something like Biron this year, sign short term in a situation where he can try to improve his value.

Well....considering how well (ok it wasn't amazing, but it was a drastic improvement) the Leafs played (PK and Goals Against) AFTER Toskala left, I find it hard that any GM will make him a starter. He'll be lucky to find a job even in the KHL (some team with money might be desperate enough to take a chance).

If Nabokov is out, I'd take Vesa back at the right price.

Trust me, he is NOT the same goaltender as he was before in SJ. TRUST ME. Unless he signs a 1-2m contract and is willing to be a 1B or #2, you don't want him. The Sharks would not even make the playoffs next year if you take him as your starter.

Thats an interesting concept. I wonder if the salary cap goes up if a player pays a team to play.

He is. He's dead serious. He'll be a starter back in the Finnish League.

To be your back-up, I hope. If Vesa Toskala started for the Sharks that would be such a waste of talent. With him in goal they would be guaranteed to go nowhere. If any team signs Toskala, it should be a rebuilding team so that he could help them finish in the bottom-5 of the league and get another good draft pick

I would have no problem bringing Tosk back cheap (and I suspect he'd come very cheap) and I watched a fair amount of Leaf's games.

Worst case, on a cheap contract, you waive him. No real risk involved.

At least leaf fans know they can't finish last if another team starts Toskala

If Andrew Raycroft can have a respectable season (21 games played, .911 save percentage) with a good team, I think Toskala can do so as well. San Jose isn't Toronto, Toskala is probably not a bad option at a cheap price.

no way is he euro league bound after one bad(not mediocre) season.

is a backup to a team that needs it and will get paid 1-1.5 mil similar to what happened to raycroft.

I think he would play alot better in a less pressure role (e.g. playing for a southern team or as a backup)

I'm sure some team will take a chance on him, perhaps a low-budget team that doesn't want to spend big on a big name goltender. St. Louis, perhaps?

There's no reason for SJ to bring him back. Him & Greiss are not good enough for SJ to pin their goaltending hopes on.

I think Dallas is a reasonable destination.

Dude, he's been brutal the past two years. I think a lot of it has to do with his injury problems, he's just not durable enough to be a #1 goalie. He's also incredibly inconsistent.

I have seasons tickets to the Heat, so got to see the goalies in the system a fair amount (44 gms I think) At the beginning of the season I would have endorsed Irving, but after he missed some time with an injury he never regained his form. Shantz ended up playing far better then either of the others. Even though his record my not show it, he was by far the best Heat goalie this year.

Tosk is dreaming if he thinks a team is going to invest in him as a starter. I can't even think of 1 team that will require his services.

two seasons ago he played like a backup, which isn't terrible

last year he was brutal though.
