The Goalie and the other defenders were ahead of the play, while the last defender was on/behind the goal line. That is an offside because there is not TWO opposing players between him (the attacker) and the goal line.

Quote:
an offside foul is called when an offensive player, or attacking player, is passed the ball and there are not at least two opponents between him or her and the goal line. Usually, these are the goalkeeper and one other defender, but not necessarily. The penalty for an offside foul is that the other team is given possession of the ball.

The offside rule goes out the window if it is in your own field of play. So say it is the dieing minutes of the game and the opposing team brings out their goalie to play as an attacker. Then you can make any play as long as the receiving playing is in his own half of the field.

To me it is pretty straight forward, but I have played soccer for more than half my life.

What a strange rule !! i played soccer for years and never figured out it was like that !
For me it was simply the last defender ! and i granted the goalie a special right to escape the off side counting, like the one of taking the ball with the hands inside the perimeter !!

tks and regrets

viva mexico

Germany and the Dutch are the two big teams (outside the US) that I support, but I see Germany having a rough time of it after losing Enke (RIP), Adler and Ballack. Lukas Podolski is my favorite player in the game, so here's to hoping he can play like he did in 2006.

Tomorrow's games should be interesting - Greece & SK will undoubtedly be slow & dull, but I think Nigeria & Argentina will be fun - I actually think the Argentinians will struggle mightily in this tournament under Maradona - he and Messi have been having a bit of a tiff since he became coach. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nigeria pull it out (that's what she said).

GO US!

This could easily be 4-0 Argentina if they finished their chances and the Nigerian goalie wasn't playing very well.

Greece has never scored in WC play.
maybe they can do something against Nigeria. But that has 0-0 written all over it.

That's soccer. The biggest challenge is finishing your chances you do get.

No, but if they want a chance, they're going to have to score soon. That was the last way they envisioned opening up their World Cup tourney.

Edit: The way England is playing, the game very well could have been decided in the 4th minute.

Edit again: Wow.... that was Leightonesque. Tie game.
