3 team Canada's.

Misfit gave me an idea... in one of his posts he said you could probably make a 3rd team Canada and they would still be competetive...

But what if you were to truely enter 3 team Canada's... how would you do it?

A West team (B.C. and Alberta), a Central team (sask, man, ont) and an East team (Que, Altantic Canada)?

Or would you load one team up, then a second and then a third team?

Or have 3 GM's draft their teams, in the order of 1-2-3,3-2-1 for every 2 rounds?

I like the West/Central/East idea personally, it's incredible how different the country is with the West made up of power forwards and hulking defencemen, the Central team a combination of grit and skill on the blueline, and the Eastern team with excellent goaltending and loaded with skilled players.

heck, Alberta could put in a team that would compete with Finland/Germany/Slovakia etc.

Team West

Here is who I have narrowed down for the selections for team West... it looks good in all positions but in net. With guys who are Canadian but not born in Canada (i.e. Heatley), I used where they played their junior hockey as a guide:

Centre

Joe Sakic (Col) B.C.
Stu Barnes (Dal) Alta.
Steve Yzerman (Det) B.C.
Wes Walz (Min) Alta.
Dave Scatchard (NYI) Alta.
Brendan Morrison (Van) B.C.
Mark Messier (NYR) Alta.
Mike Comrie (Pho) Alta.
Daymond Langkow (Pho) Alta.
Trevor Linden (Van) Alta.
Shawn Horcoff (Edm) B.C
Jeoffry Lupul (Ana) Alta.

Left Wing

Ryan Smyth (Edm) Alta.
Paul Kariya (Col) B.C.
Ray Whitney (Det) Alta.
Mark Recchi (Phi) B.C. ---- I finally found somewhere he was listed as a LW...

Right Wing

Dany Heatley (Atl) Alta. (played jr hockey in the AJHL, good enough for me).
Jarome Iginla (Cal) Alta.
Darren McCarty (Det) B.C.
Trent Hunter (NTI) Alta.
Shane Doan (Pho) Alta.
Darcy Tucker (Tor) Alta.

Defence

Robyn Regehr (Cal) Alta (once again, junior hockey)
Eric Brewer (Edm) B.C.
Jason Smith (Edm) Alta.
Richard Matvichuck (Dal) Alta.
Jay Bouwmeester (Fla) Alta.
Sheldon Souray (Mon) Alta.
Dan Hamhuis (Nsh) B.C.
Scott Neidermayer (NJD) Alta.
Chris Phillips (Ott) Alta.
Derek Morris (Pho) Alta.
Scott Hannan (San) B.C.
Mike Rathje (San) Alta.
Brad Stuart (San) Alta.
Daryl Sydore (Tam) Alta.
Brent Sopel (Van) Alta.

Goaltenders - not pretty

Chris Osgood (StL.) Alta.
Alex Auld (Van) Alta.
Chris Mason (Nsh) Alta.
Jamie McLennan (NYR) Alta.

My picks are:

Kariya - Sakic - Heatley
Recchi - Comrie - Iginla
Smyth - Linden - McCarty
Whitney - Yzerman - Doan

extras: Walz, Langkow, Hunter

Neidermayer - Regehr
Stuart - Brewer
Rathje - Smith

extras: Hamhuis, Bouwmeester

Osgood
McLennan
Auld

You realize, you're probably going to get into a debate now on who should go if there was a West team I can almost guarantee there'll be a few people that'll make sure you know they disagree with you. Anyways, good work, I've thought about the possibilities of having three Canadian teams before in the same manor as you mentioned. If I knew a better way than searching for each player to find out where they were born, I'd do one of the other two team's myself, but I don't have that kind of time at the moment. Except on D, I think East would have a pretty good team with exceptional goaltending.

Well, then how does it break down?

B.C., Alta, Sask., Man. as the west? Ontario as central and Que/Atlantic as east?

Hardly fair... I could see lump sask with the west, but not manitoba...

If you remember the strike year, that is how they did that 4 on 4 tourney I believe. Team West was Manitoba west. Then there was a team Ontario and a team Quebec. I'm not sure how the Maritimes worked. If you look at the population, it's fair....

Except we produce more high quality guys (outside of in net) then the other places. I mean, I can't think of a city (and surrounding area) that produces more hockey players then Edmonton (Moscow I suppose).

Rob Niedermayer was born in Alberta I believe, but Scott was born in B.C.

ya, both Niedermayers would be on the team no doubt - and, lol, Linden wouldn't even make team west dawgbone. Comrie, Morrison, Niedermayer, Walz, Sakic, and Yzerman would all come LONG before Linden - heck Messier on the small ice would possibly come before Linden! But yes, no doubt, we could definately ice a team that would definately compete with teams like Sweded, Finland, US, and Slovakia - the Russians and Czechs may be notably ahead of us on paper. LOL, but then again - there would be two other Canadian teams we'd have to face!

Gagne - Sakic - St. Louis
Smyth - Thornton - Iginla

Extras - Yzerman, Richards, Maltby, Regeir, Jovanovski

Team 2:

Kariya - Lecavalier - Bertuzzi
Nash - Spezza - Tanguay
Stillman - Primeau - Recchi
Roberts - Madden - Walker

McCabe - Aucoin

Giguere
Turco

Extras - Morrison, Boynton, Lankow, Shanahan, Sopel

Team 3:

Daze - Allison - Murray
Sanderson - Comrie - Carter
O'Neill - Peca - Morreau

I was more concerned with quality than quantity... I mean I went through a bunch of the teams and found a lot of the quality was in BC/Alta, and Que/Atl., but a lot of the quantity was in Ont. The Ont. team really hurts offensively (esp. on the wings), but they have good defence and goaltending...

So I broke things down based on quality of players...

I wouldn't put Rob anywhere close on that team.

With regards to linden, it is completely optional... I think he is a very good checking centre, and is outstanding on the draws... but in terms of my checking centre, Morrison doesn't go there, Walz is certainly a consideration, which is why he is one of my spares, and my problem with Messier is that I don't know what he does anymore...

I'd take Walz every day of the week and twice on sundays before Linden. Messier still has pretty decent hands, and still is still probably one of the top 2-3 leaders in the league (although he's not like he was before). Rob got some mention for the WC team - so I'm sure he'd get strong consideration for ours.
Sakic-Yzerman-Morrison-Walz
That is probably how I would align my centers, Yzerman can't go, then I'd ..... grudgingly include Comrie

I honestly don't see what Morrison can do without top wingers by him, so it's either the first two lines or nothing... and I think if you surround Comrie with a guy like Recchi and Iginla, it covers up his flaws and he has one of the better offensive minds in hockey.

Yzerman's health is a question mark for me, so he's my 4th line centre/face-off specialist... 2 years ago he is my number 2 centre.

I think Rob got consideration based on his World Championship play... and I think it was him and Horcoff as a pair that worked well together, not either one individually.

By popular demand: TEAM QUEBEC

Tanguay Lecavalier St-Louis
Robitaille Lemieux Audette
Gagne Damphousse Lapointe
Dupuis Ribeiro Dumont

(extras: Gelinas, Daze, Briere, P Bergeron, Turgeon, Juneau)
(plus Laraque and Worrell, just for fun)

Desjardins Dandenault
Quintal Brisebois
Boucher Bergeron

(extras: Gauthier, Bouillon, Robidas, Dykhuis)

Brodeur
Theodore
Luongo

(extras: Denis, Blackburn, Fleury, Thibeault, Garon, Cloutier, Biron, Lalime, Potvin...)

RW is kinda weak. I guess Daze or Gelinas could play the off wing to take out Dumont. And I'll trade goalies for a d-man or two... Still, it'd be a fun team! Lots of end-to-end rushes, great passing, great saves...

.
