I don't think anyone will abandon the Wild because Boogaard leaves. However, it's like the difference between a good waitress and a bad waitress.

With the bad waitress, you'll still show up to the restaurant and buy your soda and burger. With the good waitress, you show up to the restaurant, and she sells you a your soda and burger, and then you end up buying an appetizer, dessert, a gift card and 2 shots of jagermeister.

Maybe that analogy isn't so good, but Boogaard compells people to spend money on the Wild and his jersey.

That's true, but the key to having people show up and spend money is the quality of the food and environment (to continue the analogy). If the Wild are playing well, Boogie can be replaced; if not, his absence will be noted as an excuse.

They sure as hell didn't play well while he was here this past year, so I doubt his being gone would even be approached as an excuse.

It wouldn't be the excuse, but it would be another one piled on top of the list of apathetic excuses fans have.

too true. if we do better in the standings his absence won't be proclaimed the reason, but if we do worse...Well it will be one more reason why people will begin to filter away from the team in general. I realize the people that didn't like him have legitimate reasons, but for me his presence at least offered the opportunity for some sort of excitement in a game where we were playing listlessly in general. The "oooo's" and cheering when he missed a big check weren't for the check--they were for the attempt. Probably because no one else was doing anything.

whatever--he's gone. I'm just anticipating a team that's a little less fun to watch next year.

You guys really think if Boogaard was let go some "fans" would stop paying attention to the Wild? I would go ahead and say they weren't really fans to begin with. There are players that can do with Boogaard does without being completely worthless otherwise, I would hope Fletcher realizes this and can attempt to get somebody to fill that role, maybe another Clutterbuck type?

fans as in people who pay money to watch hockey, yes. have you been to the X? seen any boogaard jerseys? I can't tell you how many times I've been walking around the concourse and watching people rush over the rail to watch warm ups just to see if Boogaard is dressed. His absence alone might not make them re-think spending money, but coupled with our performance the last two seasons and Gaboriks departure it's more than enough to lose ticket revenue.

An irrationally vocal minority, yes.

The same people that say a hockey game isn't a hockey game without multiple fights.

The same people who can't accept that the vast majority of the NHL is moving away from having the traditional enforcer.

The same... You get the idea...

There are some people who wouldn't follow a team like the Twins if they got rid of Mauer...I know apples to oranges but some fans follow players, not the team.

Or sit on his 6'7" butt. I hear Boogaard makes a mean 'corn though; one good enough to see in person.

it's the anticipation that a fight/brutal hit could happen that would be the draw. you might not think of them as fans, but some people place rather more weight on that side of the game than you do. I'm not saying they'll stop following/watching the team; I'm saying that if a person is most attracted to the violence in the sport, they're more likely to pay money to watch a team where that sort of thing is at least possible every night.

He is a draw for more people than you'd like to think about--he is (was) even more important in that area because our team doesn't have any truly dynamic players (until Burns gets his arse in gear).

Can you see the logic in this w/out agreeing with that particular POV. I know people like this--they do exist.

BTW I still think this means free runs at our players. Havlat, Bouchard, Wellman, Lats. Opponents really don't have to care if they injure one of our players as we'll have no one to stick up for them.

Big George Laraque. Montreal bought him out a couple days ago and could be had for cheap. Of course I probably should have added a smiley or two to that, but it's okay.

oi. with Lats, and the desire to ship one of the Kostitsyn brothers off to us for Sheppard, plus BGL, we'll look to assemble a Habs/Hawks hybrid. I'd take Bergeron back if we can get rid of Zid, too.

If you think Boogaard can't play, why bring in Laraque. Ewww...

What's the story on Kassian? I hear conflicting reports on his ability and whether he's ready to play in the NHL.

Richards seems to like having an enforcer on the roster, so why not give him Boogaard's minutes? It sounds like he's a better hockey player and has a cheaper contract. I keep hearing about him getting important shut-down minutes with the Aeros so I assume he's not a huge liability in his own zone.

Although probably not as intimidating as the Boogeyman, he doesn't seem to have any hesitation in dropping the gloves with anyone.

Bouchard's fists can only pound so many faces this season, it'd be nice to have another guy who's willing to drop the mitts with Alex Burrows.

Fine, I'm dumbing down my posts because apparently subtle sarcasm doesn't translate well.

There are plenty of serviceable bottom six free agents. The following would add toughness without being liabilities:
Mair, Nichol, Burish, Torres, Nystrom, Pyatt, Begin, Asham.

The 3 games I went to in Minnesota this year I seen more Boogaard Jerseys then any other player. In fact I think if there was a name on the back it was Boogaard.

Colorado doesn't have a goon or all that much steel, and they did fine. Same with Detroit. Skill trumps steel anyday.

They did better when they had McCarty.

Is Carcillo a FA? He's the kind of sandpaper-guy-with-skill that we could use.
