Yip has offensive skills, he's shown them at every level he's played. He's also incredibly hard working and has a good sense for the offensive side of the game. I just can't see him being a third/fourth liner. One his defensive game seems lacking. Two I think he takes poor penalties which your bottom line guys cant be taking.

I think he smartens up and becomes a good offensive player for the Avs who's also a physical sparkplug.

I'm thinking the low expectations have something to do with something other than his hockey ability and certainly is no reflection on how he's performed so far in his short career.
Players don't just automatically improve upon their numbers year after year. Yip got playing time after injuries forced him into a scoring role -- are you basing your projected numbers off of the same scenario, where he steps in as a scoring 2nd line winger? Or do you expect him to put up 30-40 points playing on the third or fourth line?

I haven't projected or prognosticated any numbers. All numbers I provided were actual tangible proven look-up-able NHL statistics. Which I guess has no value compared with look-up-able NCAA statistics when projecting NHL potential...

I'm not even saying that his performance in a short amount of time should be an indication of what type of player he will be. My only point is that his NHL performance thus far should have some kind of impact on people's prognostications and I find it curious that it has none and people are assuming it's dead on lock that he's been a flash in the pan.

A lot of us are saying that if he gets ice time when someone goes down with an injury he should be able to replace them well. Thats exactly what he did last year and what a lot of people think he can do in the future. Prior to this season we weren't even sure he was going to be a NHL player. Most of us are penciling him in our line-up in 2010/2011, thats a pretty big impact made by Yip's play.

But that's just me.
When the former is a much larger game sample than 32, I take it more in to account than the latter.

Listen, Yip played well, and for that reason, he's getting thrown in to a lot of peoples' projected lineups. That alone is a big improvement from last year.

A larger sample size, yes, but a different level of competition. The smaller sample is the same level as the one in question with regards to Yip's potential. On the flip side of that reasoning I'd say injuries are a concern with him, easily a bigger concern than his lack of offensive polish when he was a freshmen and sophomore at BU.

I'm not into making projections. Will injuries derail his career? Will he develop confidence issues? Who knows. All I can say is that he's got a chance to be a nice part of this team's future, yes based on his small sample size of play at this level.

Bust. In all honesty 32 games is a small sample size. Hell in 39 games in his first season Bernier had 27 points yet hasn't ever lived to that. This question is about a year to premature but given where he was projected to be at this point and where he is now, he has exceeded expectations.

Sure he's exceeded anyone's expectations in his rookie campaign thus far, but flying in under the radar can greatly benefit a player. I won't say that teams are studying film of Brandon Yip, but they're definitely going to be aware of his quick release in the coming season. You don't give time and space to an inexperienced player with a quick shot; you take his space away and force him to make an inexperienced play.

Honestly I don't think he'll get that much playing time in 2010-11, because there's going to be a lot of players considered ahead of him (and justifiably so) on the depth chart. To me, his future success depends on how he deals with that adversity. He has to realize he got a taste of the NHL not due primarily to his skill and merit, but circumstance. He'll have to compete from day one with NHL regulars, or at the very least players with a lot more experience, for a roster spot. If he doesn't get that spot -- he has to focus on improving his game, and not being bitter and/or nostalgic of the time he held down an NHL roster spot with mild success.

I'm not into projections either, but I'll quantify this for argument's sake. I think he'll get some time due to injuries, and I stand by my 5-10-15 prediction.
