I like Ranford, but hearing that Kompon hasn't been signed yet is the best news so far this offseason.

Kings updated the coaching staff on the web page. Hardy removed but Kompon and Ranford still listed. I don't think they are going to go anywhere this year.

The Kings should hire Roenick, Cloutier and Blake as their new assistants on July 1st. This will distract the fans from the fact that the Kings are not going to sign any top tier UFAs.

I think OD would make a great coach (someday), but should start coaching in the minors. It is one thing to mentor other defensive players and another to formulate a game plan, teach it, get players to buy into it, and have it work.

I would prefer an experienced defensive coach at the NHL level, who has had some success...then ask him if he knows a good special teams coach. Ranford seems to be a good coach, hope he is re-signed.

Hardy has been a fan favorite for a long time, I do wish him and his family to get through this...in a situation like this, even having it work out for the best may not be very good.

Especially since we are starting to see a changing of the guard at the NHL ranks.
So bring Morris up to be an assistant and hire Boughner as the head coach in Manchester? I like that idea.

From someone on the CBJ board...

Quote:
Expect Brad Berry to come on and replace Gord Murphy, who may be headed to Los Angeles (to replace Mark Hardy).
The CBJ cleaned house today with the assistant coaches.

Murphy makes a ton of sense. Former Flyer and Panther.

Prior to last season, the Blue Jackets had a top 10 defensive team. Here is how their goals against average/game over the last five seasons...

09-10: 24th
08-09: 9th
07-08: 8th
06-07: 16th
05-06: 26th

And below are rankings of the BJ's shots against average per game over the past five seasons...

09-10: 17th
08-09: 3rd
07-08: 6th
06-07: 10th
05-06: 28th

Difficult to measure how much of an impact Murphy's coaching had, as the personnel on defense and in net has to factor in to the defensive stats, but you have to respect that he's been with the organization for 7 seasons and enjoyed a long NHL career.

I dug up some stats from Steven's head coaching days with the Flyers.

Quote:
In 2007-2008, the Flyer’s had the 18th best goals against average at 2.77. They ranked 27th in shots against, giving up 31.8 per game.
In 2008-2009, the Flyer’s had the league’s 16th best goals against. Funny since the actual number is higher than the previous year at 2.83. That team finished, again, better in the rankings in shots against per game, but worse overall, letting 32.5 shots get to their goalie every 3 periods.

If this is what it takes to not see him doing commentary on VS anymore, I'm all for it.

Well to his credit, Dean has been perfectly honest about wanting to instill the flyers mentality and culture here in los angeles

Those goals against are good numbers considering their goaltending situation has been one of the worst in the league for quite some time. At least in my opinion. Glad you pulled those up. Not sure if I would want him as a defensive coach, head coach in the future would definitely be out of the question, and if something happened with Murray, that would be worth worrying about.

Yeah my knee jerk reaction qualified by minimal research doesn't have me too keen on stevens. You are right that considering their goalie situation that the goals against isn't too bad but it's the shots against that really worries me, even though poor rebound control can inflate those numbers.

Sounds to me like the accusing party was not willing to cooperate.

My interpreation of the whole thing is that she regretted calling the police immediately afterwards. Whatever happened was basically unworthy of reporting.
