If I had to rank the 5 most guys that should be moved due to cap reasons, it would look like this:

1. Huet
2. Campbell
3. Hossa
4. Byfuglien
5. Versteeg

It would be a HUGE surprise if Hossa was moved after 1 yr of his contract...

Still, trading for that kind of contract does have it's trepidations. It's not a terrible contract like DiPietro's is, or Yashin's was, but it's going to affect his trade value.

Hossa's contract is great

That cap hit would only increase his value

Hossa would have signed only a couple of years 3 max, if getting cup out ruled everything else when weighing his options. Maybe in NHL 10 Hossa gets traded, not in real life.

I don't believe this at all. In my mind, Hossa is just as safe as Toews, Kane, and Keith are. He's one of the last players we would move when we have Ladd, Buff, Versteeg, Hammer, Sharp, and Bolland who could draw interest. If we could find someone to take Huet, that's all the better and helps even more.

I agree this rumor likely untrue, hossa staying.

HOWEVER - if there is any truth to it - and I said IF - the bruins would be calling quickly.

Chiarelli loves hossa and tried to bring him to boston before, Chara and Hossa are reported to be good friends, our RW's - they are as bad as almost any group of RW's in league, and bruins have lots of picks to trade.

2 things cause I see them coming so let me head them off at pass.

Yes, bruins tight against cap and would need to make space - So will ANY team looking at a player like Hoosa. It isn't like Pheonix is going to be in on him.

This ain't no salary dump, Bruins would have to pay a lot for hossa, Chicago might give away sopel types to save space, they are gonna want plenty for a player like Hossa.

I'm not sure anyone would take Hossa's contract. He's signed until he's 42. Sharp will probably go. Huet will get sent down to the minors.

Chicago may want a lot, but they won't get a lot.

Hossa is a bargain. Anyone who doesn't get that is out to lunch. They'll dump guys like Versteeg, Byfuglien, Huet, Sopel and Sharp before they'll move him. He's very productive, has a great cap hit and Chicago is in win now mode. He's about as safe as Kane and Toews.

Yes, would seem very good in Boston....
Agreed. I can't think of a more perfect linemate for David Krejci than Marian Hossa. He can think the game at Krejci's level, (much like Satan did), he's a two-way force like Krejci, plus he's big, strong, fast and he's a left handed shooter with a rocket of a wrister... I.D.E.A.L.

Hossa is signed to a BELOW MARKET VALUE contract. When he's one the games premier talents, you don't move them.

While Hossa was signed and traded by Ottawa, it was under different management (Muckler did the deal). I highly doubt it would be a disaster if Hossa returned to Ottawa.

Regardless, he's not being moved - his contract is too well built.

Haven't read the whole thread but I was considering asking whether Yzerman would try to ask for Hossa the other day. Their is the obvious Bowman/Yzerman connection, and Hossa played in Detroit last year so the 2 are probably familiar with each other. Hossa can play the Wings style, so can Kopecky. He also has experience which Yzerman wants. I can see Stevie trying to obtain Hossa maybe with some of his young D or his first rounder.

^ This. I'm willing to bet that GMs of some contending teams have had trouble sleeping at night ever since they realized the effect of front-loaded contracts on the Hawks' cap situation. Hossa is a 7-8M player for at least 5-6 more years at a cap hit that's the same as Jason Pominville.

The Kings need a scoring winger. What would Chicago want from the Kings for a Hossa/Kopecky package?

I'm thinking a goalie to replace Niemi (Quick?) + cheap young forward who can step in now (Moller?) + prospects and picks. Far off?

Why does Niemi need replaced? The guy is an RFA, and I imagine he'll be re-signed to a reasonable contract. I am just guessing now, but I believe based on his age he should be eligible for arbitration which means the team could elect to go that route and avoid any chance of an offer sheet to inflate his cap hit.

EDIT: Assuming the fax machine is working this year .......

I can see the Devils getting Sopel if Martin/Mottau walk on July 1 and the Devils need a body. Lou was in on Hossa and thought he had him until Pittsburgh sweetened the pot. If Kovalchuk walks, Hossa is a guy I can see Lou getting. Hossa, Sopel for something.

Niemi is going to get at least $3 million per year, and Chicago can't afford him at that price.
