2011 Calgary Stampeders Thread

If a Mod could please sticky this, it would be much appreciated.

Game 1 of pre-season action was today, and the Stampeders came away with a 23-21 win over the Eskimos.

Some of the rookies had a pretty good debut tonight.

- Landan Talley made made four receptions.

- Rob Maver was a perfect 3-for-3 on FG's.

- Ray Cheatham led the team in tackles.

- Johnnie Dixon returned an interception for a TD.

- Zac Champion finished the game and completed four of six passes for 75 yards, also scoring the game-winning TD.

Drew Tate completed 18 of 29 throws for 249 yards. Looked pretty good.

I know it's only pre-season, but a win over the Eskimos is always awesome.

Great to hear. Also good news is the Lions won. In the CFL it is ABG for me (anything but green).

Stampeders are expected to sign QB Cody Pickett today, to compete with Zac Champion for that 3rd string QB spot.

Quote:
The Calgary Stampeders have made no secret of their desire to keep a sense of competition among their quarterbacks in training camp.

And that competition could be renewed as early as Monday with the expected signing of former Toronto Argonaut (and former high school rodeo star) Cody Pickett.

The Stamps were talking with Pickett on Sunday, confirmed Stamps coach and general manager John Hufnagel, who was left in a lurch last week when Barrick Nealy suddenly announced his retirement, leaving Henry Burris, Drew Tate and newly signed Zac Champion remaining in camp.

This would be a great depth move at QB for the Stamps if they do sign Pickett. He's probably more of a backup QB so having him for a 3rd would be a nice position for the Stamps to be in.

Awesome the CFL is back, boo yaa!!!

It's official now, the Stampeders have signed Cody Pickett.

As per TSN:

Quote:
The Calgary Stampeders signed veteran quarterback Cody Pickett on Tuesday.
Should be interesting to see how he does in camp and if he pushes anyone out.

Also,

Quote:
The Stampeders also announced that import defensive lineman Derrick Gray, import defensive back Ronnie Amadi and non-import receiver Matt Lambros have been released.
I don't know why Ronnie Amadi was brought back in the first place, but I'm glad to see him gone.

Pre-Season Game 2 was this afternoon, and the Stampeders beat the Roughriders 41-17 at McMahon Stadium.

Very happy to see the Stamps destroy the Riders. Even if it was only Preseason.

Keep the Rider fans quiet for awhile.

Sheridan Announces Retirement

Quote:
Calgary Stampeders offensive lineman Matt Sheridan has announced his retirement from football.

“Matt has decided to retire, return to his home in Winnipeg and work diligently towards the goal of getting in better condition, which would allow him to return to the game sometime in the future,” said Stamps head coach/general manager John Hufnagel.

Can't say I'm surprised.

Stampeders released the following players today:

K Warren Kean
FB Guillaume Senecal
WR Jonathan Lowe
DL Jae Thaxton
DL Darrell Robertson
DL Eugene Kinlaw
DL Tim Hunt
DB John Eubanks
DB Jason Horton
DB Chris Bowens
LB Greg Trent
QB Zac Champion
RB Derek Watson

The only name that comes as a bit of a surprise for me is John Eubanks. Would have liked to of kept him around.

Looks like our QB situation heading into the season will be: 1) Henry Burris, 2) Drew Tate and 3) Cody Pickett. I like!

What a turn of events in Saskatchewan. A too many men call in overtime lets Montreal tie it up. Not to mention the probably catch of the year on the convert.

Just need the Als to close it out...which they don't. Useless Montreal

Stamps seem a little flat going into half time.Even though they have had a huge advantage in time of possesion.

I agree. Not impressed with what I've seen given the time of possession. Hopefully we're in for a more exciting and offensively 2nd half.

Stamps win 30-16.

Murphy definitely had a horrible game. So frustrating to see the offense not being able to close.

Reynolds was a beast as usual.

The most important thing was getting the W.

Stamps managed 30 points while being fairly lousy on the offensive side of the ball, We did a great job converting on the Argo's turnovers.

Reynolds was awesome as you said.

Expected a win and wasnt exactly blown away by our performance, but hey its only the first game, lots of room for improvement.

No argument there.

Pretty good CFL debut for Maver too, going 5/6.

Reynolds looks like he hasn't missed a beat. I expect another rushing title for him this year. He finished the game tonight with 116 yards rushing, his 29th 100-yard game to set a new Stampeder record.

btw, weird to see Copeland in blue, or any other colors other than the red and white.

Haha, yea Nice to see Copeland fumble the ball yesterday and get the win over Barker as well.

Sounds like we could be seeing Sam make his Stamps debut on Saturday in Hamilton.

Stamps win 23-22 in Hamilton.

Not an impressive performance in the win, but a gutsy one to pull it off to lead to the win.

Maver wins the kicking battle today against DeAngelis.

After the punt return for the touchdown there's no way I thought we'd win the special teams battle...well done Maver!

Totally, a real dirty win... DeAngelis was shockingly poor today which for the first time ever was good news . Way to go Maver! Welcome to the Stampeders

I like that Maver kid they have. Hopefully he'll turn into the next Deangelis here or even better than him. This kid is off to a great start in Calgary.

Stamps are off to a pretty good start to the season too. Not a great performance in Hamilton but still battled it out to get the win. Thats a good sign there.

Its going to be a fun season!

The defense has been great to start the season, but the offense needs to work on finishing off drives. I'm just eager to see Rambo back in the lineup.

It sounds like Thelwell could play Wednesday in Toronto, which would be big.

Also, I liked what I saw from Sam in his debut.

Dear Calgary,

The game is 60 minutes long. Not 45.

Love,
Stewie.

PS: Burris?
