Top 3 players you want gone/signed

Post here the top 3 players you want the Flyers to let go (by free agency or trade), then post the top 3 players you want the Flyers to sign or re-sign.

Gone
1.) Carcillo (Go with more skill)
2.) Boucher (Had terrible regular season moments, besides the stretch/playoffs)
3.) Timonen (Too much money, and his game is diminishing to me, keep Coburn instead)

Sign
1.) Asham (one of my favorite players, great role player and great leadership)
2.) Dan Ellis (may be a #1 goalie in the NHL, has had some success)
3.) Ondrej Pavelec (I read somewhere he is a free agent? Maybe a RFA, not sure)
3b.) Alex Auld (wasnt to bad with the Stars, not sure why they realeased him)
3c.) Johan Hedberg (Stopped the Flyers this year, at one time had a really good GAA)

Our window to win is pretty narrow, so I see no reason to get rid of Timonen at all. The guy is vastly underrated. Anyway, I want one of Carcillo or Asham gone seeing as how our third line looks to be a scoring line again. Cote should be gone as well. I want one of Ellis or Nabokov for the next year or two (I think we can win with either of them, especially Nabokov who I think would do well with a change of scenery) until Bob/Eriksson is ready to take the starting role. The last thing we need to absolutely do is find a competent #5 defensemen. I'm not up on who the RFA/UFA (or are available for trade) D are this year so I don't know who that could be but if we start next season with Bartulis/Parent (assuming Krajicek is gone) as our 5/6 D....I'll be pretty frustrated.

eh. boucher gone. carcillo not. timonen maybe. personally, boucher, with his playoff stats helping, could probably fetch a 4th or 5th round pick. assuming we bring in another goalie (preferably ellis or harding) he's more than expendable. carcillo overall i think has shown flashes of offensive ability, along with his already obvious agitating talents. with asham probably gone, and lappy's injuries this year, we're going to need his grit/toughness/whatever the hell you want to call it next year. timonen to me is a bit of a toss up. yes, he's got a brutal cap hit, but stats aside the guy is beyond valuable and i'm not convinced coburn is at the point of being able to step in for him as an outright replacement.

here's my "gone" list.

gone:
1. powe - with testwuide and legein around, i feel like there's not much necessity to keep him. aside from speed and hitting ability, he really doesn't bring all that much to the table. for that matter, nodl could take his spot, and i honestly would rather not see nodl in orange and black.

2. boucher - see previous boucher rant.

3. asham - i like the guy. a lot. but he's replaceable. i feel about him pretty much the same as i do about powe. i'd prefer asham over powe though, just not by a whole lot.

haven't really looked to see who's available/who we could potentially trade for as of yet, thus making a top 3 to get list would be somewhat irresponsible.

Why get rid of Timonen and go back to having 1 really good d-man instead of two? Didnt we learn our lesson the season before? Ill be super pissed if Timonen is gone...but I dont have to worry about it since the chances he gets traded is slim to none.

We all know Chris Pronger was huge for the Flyers but Jebus.. Kimmo doesn't get any respect. For his size, his ability to make the smart play 99 out of 100 times is remarkable. He has great power for his size and is easily worth every cent thats he's paid. Our defence would be nothing without him and he stays regardless of the situation.

getting rid of Timonen would be one of the stupidist things the Flyers could do.
He is invaluable,underated and unappreciated.

Anyone who suggests we would benefit from Timonen being let go seriously have short memories.

Letting go:

1. Boucher

2. Asham (I would say he's all but gone, regardless of how I feel)

3a. Hartnell...maybe (If the NTC could be waived, I think trading him after those playoffs would be beneficial towards getting decent assets back...I imagine I could be alone in considering trading him. I'm afraid of trading him however as it would make us that much smaller, and I think he's fully capable of more 60 point seasons)

3b. Parent (IF he was packaged with something towards a starting young goalie, otherwise keep him and see how he progresses)

3c. Carcillo*

I'm torn with Carcillo. I hate to think of just letting him go for nothing, we gave away a decent amount. I had a lot of optimism after Laviolette seemingly changed his game during the season, he appeared as if he was playing as a surgical agitator...however, seeing him in the playoffs, he became a liability who couldn't contain himself. We have enough penalties as it is, and he is most certainly a marked man from what I can tell.

Sign:

1. Saku Koivu - If he's available, I think he'd be invaluable as a 3rd line center. He can put up a few points and is gifted with faceoffs. If his price range was low enough, sign me up.

2. John Madden - See above, signed for the same reasoning.

3a. Nabokov - Love to have him, though I think he's going to price himself far out of our bracket

3b. Turco - I think he could perform fine and rebound with our defense, we could also keep more assets. I think it's yet to be known how much he'll get in free agency, only want him if it's reasonable.

Hm(s) Owen Nolan - If he could be had cheaply and forwards were traded for a goalie on our behalf. Unlikely.

Richard Park - Absolutely no room, but i'd love to have him on this team, possibly for our 4th line.

Lombardi - I think he'll likely re-sign, but if not...and if he could be had at a reasonable price he'd be great. Unlikely.

Leighton - As a backup, nuff said.

I stopped reading as soon as I saw Timonen on the 'gone' list.

It's amazing how quickly he's been forgotten just because Pronger now plays more minutes than him. Watch the man play, he almost never makes a mistake.

Timonen is the most unheralded player on this team now, which is hilarious because two years ago he single-handedly made our defense work.

Gone:

Asham - probably no room for him when Nodl hits a lot and is ready to make the team and Testwuide is the big RW they brought in, ostensibly to replace him/Knuble. Other guys like Legein, Maroon, etc. will have a say in this. Homer said even Holmstrom could play some games.

Krajicek - earned an NHL contract with someone else, but we don't have room for him and probably can't afford him, even at $1.25 million or so. I wouldn't mind keeping him, but I think they'll go with Oskars at 5 and find a vet to play with him - preferably someone old, big and mobile who can take some PK duty off the top 4. I like the third pair to be PK specialists, just sets up the whole game better. There is no need for Pronger and Timonen to kill penalties in the regular season except at crux points.

Leighton/Boucher - one of them has to go. As much as the players spoke up for Mike, I can't see us going into next season with the same goalie tandem. I like Boucher as a backup, but they may go the Ellis/Leighton route, with Backlund/Bobrovsky pushing them from below. We'll see. Boucher could, as a favour to him, get traded in a package to another team in need of a good backup who can, if need be, win a playoff series for you. (It would spare him a demotion to the AHL).

Signed -

Dan Ellis - a logical target if they are worried about Leighton as #1. Depends on a trade for another prospect. I could also see trading Parent for someone like Harding/Enroth (good young guy stuck beside franchise goalie) then signing Leighton and letting them fight it out.

Big Vet D - per above, a big mobile vet D to train Oskars and take some pressure off the top guys. Boynton is a good example, others have mentioned guys like O'Donnell, Mara. I haven't really looked at the UFA list yet, but a guy like that - and something that arguably could have helped up beat Chicago by giving the top guys more rest.

Big Winger - we are too small up front, and with the emergence of Leino in a top 6 role, this isn't going to get better. We were a bit small vs. Pitt, Wash, etc. Montreal beat them this year, that isn't happening again. We better bulk up or it will be trouble next postseason. If we are getting involved in trades, any added size would be of value. See, Hartnell, Scott, and another big reason not to trade Carter and strip what's left of our size up the middle. Giroux or Briere can play wing- there is no issue really.

I don't particularly "want people gone", but here's what I would probably do.

Let go:

1.) Boucher - The number of weak goals Boosh let in this year is staggering. I'm a fan of Brian Boucher the guy, not the goalie (he was very, very bad). I honestly wouldn't even trust him to be a back-up at this point (I have a feeling I am gonna get killed for this).

2.) Asham or Carcillo - They're not the same player, but there isn't room for both of them on the roster IMO. I love Carcillo, but if I'm building a team with my head I would probably keep Asham.

3.) Leighton the starter - Leighton the back-up is an okay idea going into next year. Leighton as a starter got us farther than he ever can or will again. If we give him a contract as the back-up next year out of gratitude, that is a-okay with me.

4.) Krajicek - Decent enough player, but is he part of our long term plans? Would he take a two way deal? I feel pretty good about letting Parent's back actually heal this Summer and having him and Bart get used to working together on the 3rd pairing.

5.) Pick one long term high $ contract, or one guy due for a new contract that we won't have the space to renew. Trade him. Gagne, Briere, Hartnell........maybe try to flip one of them in a package to get a starting goalie. They all played their ***** off this post-season, and I wish they could all stay, but retaining Carter, Giroux and JVR doesn't seem realistic with those three guys on the roster. As much as it sucks to say right now, I would probably have to move Briere if I could, maybe for a Handzus type guy or a goalie.

Signed/traded for:

1.) Starting Goalie - Turco, fine. Long term solution, better.

2.) Vet d-man. Doesn't have to be particularly awesome, but sturdy and reliable.

3.) Bring Handzus back. Some of our guys are gonna have to figure out how to play wing and that's that.

If Kimmo goes, Pronger plays 45 minutes a game. If anything we need more quality defence, not less.

Getting rid of:

Cote
Krajicek
For the right deal, Carle, just because of his cap hit. I thought Coburn surpassed him this year.

Hartnell seems to be back to how he was a couple of years ago so I don't want him gone. We don't have much muscle/size down the middle so having him on wing is essential.

Not sure if I agree with keeping Timonen, his 6 million salary is definatly not worth it. This is the first season he didnt have 40 points and was a minus (-2) for the first time since 2005-2006. Also he had 19 (1g,18a) powerplay points, last year he had 28 (2g,26a).

He is not worth his salary. Id rather sign two guys at 3 million each.

i agree that kimmo isn't the same d-man he was 2 years ago, but he's still a top pair d-man on pretty much every team in the nhl. unless a team is willing to severely over pay for him, i wouldn't trade him for another 2 years or so when is salary is lower but his hit is still high. even at that point, it would be silly to send him off unless we get a good young d-man back or have signed a top-notch ufa d.

now to play along w/ the thread

-i don't want to resign asham
-i would see if we can get pretty much any pick for boosh
-i would shop powe if he's asking for more than 700K/yr

-i want leighton as our backup next year
-i want turco for 1 year, vokoun or bryzgalov for 2 years after that, then whoever of our 3 top G prospects is looking the best after that
-i want someone on our 3rd d pair that doesn't give me aneurysms

Just a question for those wanting Briere moved. Do his kids live in Philly? If they do I can't imagine he'd agree to waive his NMC now that he's divorced.

OH NO! A -2!

The goalie position was also a revolving door..... Maybe that has something to do with bad numbers across the board. He was also paired with Coburn, who for almost the entire regular season, had no clue wtf he was doing...... terrible

Do you think having Pronger on the team cut down on Kimos ability to score points?

The whole team sucked in the regular season, not just 44. IMO, trade Carle. The kid makes 4+ million and HE is the one NOT worth his contract.

I dont really care how many points Kimo produces, I only care about how many he prevents.

A lot of players' PP points went down - especially on assists. If I were to guess why, I'd say it was the loss of Knuble in front of the net tipping in goals.

Giving up Timonen and trying to replace him with two okay defensemen is going to result in a hell of a lot of ugly out there when Pronger isn't on the ice. Do you remember the Coburn-Carle pairing?

Krajicek can walk - he's 100% replaceable. Timonen is not, in my opinion.

I don't see resigning the RFA's as being too huge of a deal. Should be doable.

Gone:

Boucher- not because I hate him but because I'd rather have Leighton signed as a backup. I don't buy TSN's take that Backlund is the new backup either.

Carcillo or Asham- We don't need both. I'd rather have Asham but I don't see that happening.

Carter- NOT because I don't like him but because I feel he brings us the most trade value. This has nothing to do with his playoff performance either, I just have felt for the past season he was the most out of place and movable guy on the team. I'll only be happy though if he brings us a GREAT return. His best years are still to come.

Sign/Trade:
Price- I really think that he needs a change of scenery and can be a star in this league for a long time. He is still very young and seems to be underappreciated.

Leighton- as was stated by someone else- Leighton the backup, not Leighton the starter. I'm way more comfortable with him as the backup then anyone else, and that includes outside the organization options for backups.

Tanguay- If in the event that Carter is traded for a goalie/picks/D the best of the forwards crop to me is Tanguay. He should be cheap enough and has a much more complete game than he did 5 years a go.

Gagne Richards Tanguay
Hartnell Briere Leino
JVR Giroux Nodl/Carcillo
Powe Betts Lappy

Pronger Carle
Timmonen Coburn
Parent Bartulis/Paul Mara/the Other Matt Carle

Price
Leighton

Boucher has magically disappeared and we have an extra pick form the Price deal.

3 Gone:
1. Carcillo/Asham - Take your pick. Based on this season's salary numbers, Asham would cost less and he also performed much better in the playoffs.
2. Gagne - Sentimentaly, I don't like this, but he could be the answer to how we aquire Carey Price. Find a contender that needs a winger and work out a 3-way trade to Montreal.
3. Leighton - Sorry everyone, the Leighton of the finals was the Leighton everyone was waiting for. Yeah, the defense could have helped him out, however great goalies cover up those defensive mistakes. Ben Eager and GWG should NEVER be used in the same sentence and Leighton figured out a way to make it happen. All the anti-Boosh talk irks me cause the guy was never settled into a role until March. The guy went from #2 to #1 to #2 to #3 to #2, back to #3, back to #2, then to #1 all in one season (I think that's about right). Fact is, he cleaned up his game by the start of the playoffs because he finally had a clear cut role on the team then unfortunately got hurt during the Boston series.

3 to Sign (re-sign):
1. Carey Price - Say what you will, the guy is young and was never given a decent chance in Montreal (funny thing is, the frustration started against us in the 2008 playoffs). See above for how we should at least attempt to get him here.
2. Vinny Prospal, Ray Whitney or another veteran winger - Let's face it, the loss of a veteran winger really hurt us (at least in the regular season). Why not bring in a older, but producing player that won't cost too much? Now that we made the Finals, we have proven that we are a team to take a paycut to play for.
3. Ville Leino - Yeah, he's under contract for another season, however, it couldn't hurt to give him an extension now. Say his 2010-11 season continues from the 2010 playoffs, he will be asking much more than than $800,000 per year.

Things to keep in mind:
-Still need to re-sign Coburn and find a decent defenseman that could fill the #5 spot.
-The Jeff Carter situation - While I was once all for trading Jeff Carter (for his value, not finals performance), I'm coming around. I still think if a ridiculous deal comes our way for him (NHL calibur player and two #1s) we should seriously consider as signing a big 3rd line center shouldn't be too hard considering the Flyers are a team to take a paycut for, IMO. However, if the long term plan is to keep Carter around, we MUST give him an extension this offseason. If he gets up around 50 goals this upcoming season, he will command at least 7 mil per year.
-Folks... I cannot say this enough, Leighton is NOT the answer in goal. He is a career backup and to mention him anyway else is a huge mistake. We still have Boosh in the line-up for another year and unless we can get Leighton at $1 mil or less, it's not worth it. What is really a shame is how Ray Emery probably would have flourished under Laviolette.

If Emery never plays professional hockey again, I hope there is a job for him somewhere in the NHL system. The guy finally got rid of his bad rep and karma dealt him a potential career ending injury, there's gotta be something out there waiting for him.

Richie, Briere and Roo down the middle is like what the Habs had. If you are intent of moving Carter you need to get someone big in return. Also keep in mind that Briere is 33 and injury prone, Carter is 25 and just had his ironman streak broken, plus he's better on face offs.

I still think trading Carter just because he has value is a dumb reason to trade him. If he is going to be traded, wait until the trade deadline when you can get a boatload of return.

I also think Carle's contract is not that out of whack for defensemen of his ilk. 4 million is too much, but how many defensemen of his level make considerably less than that? Who will you replace him with that is as good and will make less?

I want the Flyers to go after a veteran UFA like Aaron Ward who can be the #5 guy until the young'ns can be consistent.
