New Houston Aeros Coach

Russo's new blog...

Mike Yeo, an assistant from the Pittsburgh Penguins will be hired as Houston Aeros new coach.

Russo states that he has a TR type of coaching style, so this should reflect on our team.

Good news all around I would think.

I love the idea of a former player to transition our prospects from JR to the pros. I can't believe we didn't have someone in this position before.

Pens fans (including myself) are going to be glad to get rid of him as an NHL assistant, but don't let that fool you: he should be a valuable asset for your AHL team/prospects.

Wes Walz? player development guy meebe?

I'm neutral on the coaching thing...I know I shouldn't be, but I'm too worried about the big club right now.

Wild Close To Hiring Mike Yeo As Aeros Head Coach

Good: Knows Fletcher, coached in Pittsburgh and has won a Stanley Cup.
Bad: Coached the Pens' PP and defense.
Ugly: Drew the ire of Pens Nation.

I'm sure he'll do better in the AHL than in the NHL...but good ****ing GOD am I ever happy to have him out of Pittsburgh.

He seemed to do great things in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton before ruining Pittsburgh's power play, though.

I'd put money on it happening if Russo wrote it, but the key word is close. As in, it's not official. As in, Saku Koivu and Brian Rolston are not members of the Minnesota Wild close.

Another Fletcher crony. That's my opinion. Seriously, is he ever going to hire a guy he's not buddy-buddy with? Whatever. We'll see how he does. Yeo has a tough precedent though (KC).

Nothing wrong with hiring with someone you know as a person. That just gives Fletcher more insight in the type of person he's hiring. This is a team game, and Fletcher is not going to want to hire a person who is going to be disruptive of the team chemistry.

I honestly don't get what the league see's in him. I do say thank you very much though as a pens fan.

We will see what Yeo can do coaching wise as he will be coaching the Wild Team at the TC tournament in September...

Sounds like a good move to get the system in place down in Houston...now we'll be able to see what our prospects can do in this style of play.

I'm much more excited about the player development liaison, we've had such bad prospect performance, it should be a big thing for the kids to know what's expected of them and what they need to work on. And more dialogue with their coaches is a plus.

It's official...

Pens fans seem excited to get rid of him, but we'll see what he can do down in Houston. I might have to buy that package to watch some Aero games.

So we are becoming the Pittsburgh Penguins front office and coaching staff while we take on Blackhawks players??? Sounds about right lol

Well, it's preferable to becoming the Calgary Flames front office and coaching staff while taking on Edmonton's players.

Wild.com article on the matter. It's a bit of a fluff piece, but it gives more information on Yeo than "Pittsburgh assistant."

There is a problem with hiring who you know best over who will do the job best. I hope that isn't the case here, but it wouldn't surprise me if it is. Yeo couldn't even do a good job running power plays, and now he's rewarded with a head coaching job. All of Fletcher's important hires so far have been his buddies.

For the love of Christ, stop it with Walz! He isn't what this organization needs.

there is a level of degree that players are actually responsible when it comes to scoring

o rly? stamkos seemed to like him. yeah, you're right though--we should shy away from Stamkos types.

he isn't coaching a style--he's coaching awareness on the ice.

Yes and a lot of players like Lemaire, so why didn't we keep him?

And I guess we should hire Therrin, I mean Crosby and Malkin seemed to like him. We should shy away from those types.

We don't need Walz, he hasn't been here in how many years? If we want a director of player personal, bring in a guy like Hendrickson.

But Yeo has much more experience with Stamkos types. Fleury, Whitney, Crosby, Malin, Staal - Calder Cup or bust!
