Is Hossa in play?

If Hossa is in play and available this summer, I think this is a trade Montreal really has to look at and consider.

Sure his contract is long, but the cap hit gets lower and lower and is not that bad considering in the short term as well. Cap can be controlled if Montreal can shift some elsewhere in other trades or demotions.

Hossa teamed with Cammarelli and Plekanec or another centre brought in would be ideal than that of bringing in Vinnie, St. Louis or UFA Marleau.

Hossa is on top of his game, and he is one of the best two way players in the league.

Gauthier needs to at least kick the tires on this one.

Hossa on your team is a guaranteed spot in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals too!!! () kind of

Quote:
(CKAC Sports) - Hard to believe, but it is what announces Jim Kelley, columnist for Sports Illustrated.

"The Blackhawks will surely enjoy a summer full of celebrations, but it will also be pressure from the financial standpoint," said Kelley.

"There are contracts whose team will try to get rid of - those of Brian Campbell and Cristobal Huet come immediately to mind - but it will be difficult. Whoever has the best chance of not returning is Marian Hossa, a quality player who has lived through a succession of agreements by one year because he was trying to find a place in a club capable of winning the Cup ( mission accomplished). Expect that the Hawks are looking to exchange his rights as soon as the parade is over. "

CKAC sucks, Sports Illustrated isn't good either.

This is bs. It's like 5 mill for Hossa. He's great against the cap.

Cap hit never gets lower -- it's always the average over the lifetime of the contract.

Sorry, I meant to say the lifetime of the deal the cap is manageable at that hit over the lifetime of a Vinnie type deal.

You are correct.

First bold: I'm not sure what you mean by this, but even if his salary drops year after year, his cap hit stands.

Second bold: You have to take decision. If you want to trade for Hossa, you have to send them picks and/or prospect, because all they need is cap space. So, you add 5.xxM/y by acquiring Hossa and you want to sign/get Plekanec, Marleau or Vinny? We already have to make cap space to sign our goalies and Plekanec...

It would be hard to do this. Not far from impossible.

EDIT: Didn't see comments about cap space.

He would fit well with us. If we could re-sign Plekanec and get Hossa, we would have a pretty damn good top 6. But is Chicago looking for a goaltender? If not, we don't have a chance because we don't have anything to give.

Hossa would be perfect, however I highly doubt after signing a new long term contract with the Hawks that he would of come here.

TBH, this strikes me as Kelley speculating based on him not knowing what the heck he is talking about.

His original article mentioned Hossa signing a succession of one-year contracts to get a Cup and the possibility of trading his rights. Of course, Hossa has signed only one one-year contract (with Detroit), which does not "a succession" make; and he signed a 12-year contract with the Hawks.

No way Hossa leaves.

They will try to trade Campbell/Huet (without success) and will trade Versteeg and Sopel.

Not a lot of teams want to get locked in to that type of 12 year contract.

Trust me, I'd love to see Hossa on this team, but I highly doubt it's going to happen. I think he's staying in Chicago for the rest of his career.

He lost his first two finals and just won his first one of two so Hossa is the guy you want on your team for the next cup win

Not interested. He's 31, and his contract - while attractive for the cap hit - is too long and we'd never have a number one center with both him and Gomez for the next 4 years.

Exactly. It's amazing how many still don't understand the basics of the salary cap. The CBA is now 5 years old.

I don't want Hossa. He's had a great career and is still a very good player but he's on the wrong side of 30 and his game has started to slip.
