Just wanted some thoughts on what the NHL would be like if Gary Bettman had never become commissioner. My biggest problem with the league under his reign has been overexpansion. Obviously, having too many teams undercuts everything from the quality of play to the value of ticket packages. Without Bettman, I believe the NHL would have concentrated more on just being a good hockey league instead of trying to emulate his former employer. At least someone would have told the idiot owners that it was crazy to go beyond the Original Twenty-Six.
If Goodenow never got into power then maybe Alan Eagleson would still be in power.
That would leave the league a lot worse off.
Bettman and Goodenow deserve credit for taking the league out of the dark ages when it was run by blatant crooks.
No, Eagleson may have gotten himself in deeper and maybe would have got jail time that was fitting for the crimes he committed. Maybe Mike Barnett would have become head of the PA, or even better Brian Burke.
