Rapperswil Attendance

I am unfamiliar with Swiss hockey and recently found out that the NLA team Rapperswil operates in a town with around 8000 inhabitants! To fill the stadium literally 75% of the population would have to come to the game.

Is there some reason for this, like very populous surrounding area? How is the team in general?

Rapperswil is located right next to the town of Jona. Both put together have around 25000 inhabitants: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapperswil-Jona

By the way, the original name of the team was SC Rapperswil-Jona, though for some reason Rapperswil, the smallest municipality of the two, has always had priority when shortening the full name.

Maybe someone from the area can tell us more about it?

well, rapperswil is more known than jona. there's a old downtown (where you can find all kind of shops). they also have a zoo, a technical college and a castle. rapperswil is also more important because of the traffic routes ... jona has only the necessary things to live there. i think, that's the reason, why rapperswil had priority when shortening the full name.

the stadium is 78% filled during the year. the team have a lot of fans from the constituency of See-Gaster and toggenburg

rapperswil jona lakers wasn't good last year for all that they bought some great players (like Riesen & Manzato) and i guess it will be hard for the team to get in the playoffs next season

If you think that is small, you might want to check out another NLA team called HC Ambri-Piotta. Those guys would have to clone themselves four times to fill their stadium to a third of its capacity
