RIP Manute Bol

Rest in piece of the biggest and one of the better players and people the NBA has ever seen.

Ex-Sixers center Manute Bol, one of the greatest shot blockers and humanitarians that the NBA has ever known, died Saturday. He was 47.

One of the tallest players in NBA history at 7-7, Bol played for the Sixers from 1990-93. He became extremely ill in May after contracting Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a rare skin disease, while in his native Sudan. He passed away at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.

"On behalf of the entire Philadelphia 76ers organization, we would like to pass along our deepest and sincerest condolences to the family of Manute during this very difficult time," Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski said in a statement. "Manute's impact on this city, our franchise and the game of basketball cannot be put into words. He was a person who was continually giving of himself through his generosity and humanitarian efforts in order to make the world around him a much better place, for which he will always be remembered."

Bol, the 16th-leading shot blocker in NBA history, also played for Washington, Golden State and Miami from 1985-94. He was known for his long, wiry frame and his uncanny ability to block shots. Later, he became known for his charitable work, particularly in Africa.

I posted this photo in another thread but this is from the time he suited up for the Indianapolis Ice for charity:
