I hadnt thought much of him as of late, and Madden said that he wants 3 yrs and a raise. That doesnt sound like he will be back.

If he wants 3 years and a raise? Zero-percent.

Why would anybody care what Madden says at this point? The same guy who said Kovalev to Pittsburgh is a done deal last summer. The same guy who said the Pens were offering Fedotenko a 3 year deal with a raise last summer. The guy has no idea what he's talking about.

As far as Gonchar? If he goes to UFA, he's gone. I don't see him doing any U-Turn to comeback here at that point.

Don't know...
If he wants 3 years, possibly they'll bite.

EDIT: Not if he asks a raise, but kinda $4M per.

This is such a hard topic to discuss. There are so many factors that play a part in this.

1) If we can sign a defensive d-man, I want there to be 0% chance we sign Sarge. Self-explanatory.

2) If we can get value for Gogo somehow and sign Gonch reasonably for 2-3 years... that could open up a lot of options to better this team overall.

3) If we can't sign anyone else and we get stuck late, then I want Sarge re-signed because he does make this team better. If we don't get any of the free agents, being that it's a very thin class, then we almost need to keep Gonchar even though it's not a long-term answer to our team.

Our worst case scenario could be very ugly. We lose Gonchar and we don't bring anyone else back.

If we can't sign Gonch, I hope we get into the Kaberle sweepstakes.

The problem with Kaberle is that he would cost us assets and that he has only one year left on his deal. If he had 2 or 3 years left at 4,5m, I'd want Ray to get in the sweepstakes too but now? No thanks.

I think we're probably staring at something like 25%. If he comes back to us, there's a chance. I doubt Shero is going to chase him, though.

Worst-case scenario? We're shut out on Volchenkov, Michalek and Hamhuis, and Sarge hasn't signed yet. It would be prime bend-over-and-take-it territory there.

I hope it doesn't come to this.

3 years and a raise: 0%

Otherwise: 46%

He'll test free agency one way or another. If he doesn't get some absurd offer I rather expect that he'll sign for less here and just keep what he has going for him. If someone offers way more than he's reasonably worth...well...he's gone. I know offensive defenseman are valued in this league, but at his age its tough to know exactly what the market for him is going to be. If the difference is ~500k I could see him staying just so he doesn't have to uproot his family, but I certainly don't blame him for playing hardball to see what is out there either. As much as I'd love to believe there is no GM out there crazy enough to give him $16.5 million over 3 years I'm sure someone very well may.

I think it's about 75% that he'll come back.

Shero's made him our top off-season priority because he realizes the value of an elite PMD to the team, and I figure he'd much rather dance with the one that brought him than hand the keys to a couple of green blueliners, or pay some other guy similar money to come in and hopefully do as good a job as Sarge has.

That could be 18.0 over three years.

Mark Madden just makes stuff up. There has to be some chance he comes back, because he's Shero's top priority. I think that if we don't hear anything as free agency starts, the chances are about 10% at best. I don't think the Pens will overpay for him, whereas I think they would overpay a bit for somebody like Volchenkov. There's no reason to be loyal to Sarge to the detriment of the team, and he's going to get a lot of money either way.

Exactly, soon as the hand passes the hour, Shero better be wheeling an dealing, if there is still room should Shero not get all his answers, then work him in. Can't afford another Hossa esk fiasco.

Edit:
0% because I just want them to get onto life with out Sarge, better one season too early than two to late.

i think i'd give him two years at a raise, not three. letang and gogo won't make us forget sarge anytime soon. he is still needed on this team, imo. you sign him and just hope he stays healthy for the playoffs.

I'd say it is 60/40 or better, as both parties stated preference is making it work.

I think most likely it'll be two years at 5 per.

i want to move on from him honestly, so i'm hoping its 0 percent unless its like one or two years at 4 mil max.

we need defensemen and his defensive skills have fallen off the deep end. let sid or geno run the new pp and letang and gogo will be just fine at the points.

I'm leaning towards "not great", so maybe like 35-40%.
I do not want him at anything more than $4.5M, and no longer than 2 years. Chances are another team trumps one or both of those terms in the same deal.

But, for sake of argument, Sarge is back 2 years, $9M.

What % chance do you feel the return of Sarge means the moving of Gogo?

Because even with Gonchar, Letang, Oprik and Lovejoy (assuming), you need another D man signed, and I'd like to see the group a little tougher to play against. Moving Gogo can maybe bring in a youngish winger back and look at a 2nd top 4 D in free agency.
