Could still happen. Nobody beat a trail to his door last summer.

And has the new cap # been announced yet? If not teams could be waiting on the new number.

Don't see much lost, last year anyway.

Streit is one of the very few of recent years should have been kept, in my opinion.
Kosto was a good team guy. He was excellent in his role. He fought bigger guys, I don't know about you, but that sparks a team big time. He would fight anyone if it defended our guys. Don't care if he got his face smashed in, it showed no fear. I have full respect for the guy.

Agree, should have included him with Lang & Bouillon. Moen was a good signing to me but no one really fully replaced Kostopoulous impact. May have hurt Latendresse early too.

I posted this in trade proposal thread a few days ago:

Quote:
Sign Jokinen to 1-2 year 4.25 mil/year

Why? He's had some bad years but is a big center and has played excellent under JM.

Sign Colby Armstrong.

2010-11 MONTREAL CANADIENS
CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR
FORWARDS
* Benoit Pouliot ($1.125m) / Scott Gomez ($7.357m) / Brian Gionta ($5.000m)
* Colby Armstrong ($2.750m) / * Olli Jokinen ($4.250m) / Mike Cammalleri ($6.000m)
Andrei Kostitsyn ($3.250m) / Lars Eller ($1.271m) / * Sergei Kostitsyn ($0.900m)
Travis Moen ($1.500m) / * Maxim Lapierre ($1.000m) / * Tom Pyatt ($0.900m)
Ryan White ($0.850m)
DEFENSEMEN
Andrei Markov ($5.750m) / Ryan O'Byrne ($0.942m)
Hal Gill ($2.250m) / Josh Gorges ($1.100m)
Jaroslav Spacek ($3.833m) / P.K. Subban ($0.875m)
* Mathieu Carle ($0.900m)
GOALTENDERS
* Carey Price ($2.900m) / * Martin Biron ($1.100m)
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
ROSTER: 22; CAP:$56.8m; PAYROLL: $56.303m; CAP ROOM: $1.137m BONUSES: $0.640m

Still 1.137 mil in cap room should we want to make a trade.
As you can see, this doesn't even include the cap at 58.8 million. I left it at 56.8.

Don't worry about two-way center like Plek. Gomez, Eller, Armstrong, Sergei Kostitsyn, Lapierre, Moen, Pyatt, White & Gionta can all play PK. So can Cammalleri I bet, but doubt they put him in.

I would've loved TK and Moen on our team. Would've been pretty good checking/energy line with lapierre down the middle.

Jeez........
You couldn't see this coming? We're pretty strapped financially. I think this what many people, the so-called alarmists were expecting.

Jokinen may be big, but every time I see him he just seems to float around. There's a reason he's bounced around teams recently.

Don't forget, Martin had Jokinen in Florida. He may know how to get the best out of him.

Exactly, to prove your point:

In the 3 seasons under JM watch. Jokinen made:

2005-06 Florida NHL 82 38 51 89 +14
2006-07 Florida NHL 82 39 52 91 +18
2007-08 Florida NHL 82 34 37 71 -19

No offense, but complaining someone didn't put a - is like me complaining you didn't capatalize the beginning of your sentence. It's pretty obvious he meant re-sign.

Why do we want to assume that eller is ready for consistent duty as a #2 centre?

You take him on a short term deal and don't look back. IMO, if all goes well, Eller will be 2nd line center in 1-2 years and guys like Leblanc will be in the system. Maxwell/Engqvist will most likely be on team at that point as well.
Beware of a supposed core player (which a legit top 2 centre should be) who is about to play on his 5th team in 5 years. But hey, while we're at it, lets take a stab at yashin too

I understand, but to be fair, Calgary even traded away a supposed franchise d-man. They needed short-term results and it didn't work out. Florida traded him the year after the zednik incident. If you recall, it was his skate that almost killed zednik.

I remember the Jagr trade, Pens got prospects, the centre piece being Kris Beech.

Beginning of next season, Pens had him centering the top line (with Mario Lemieux on wing).

The kid was way over his head and in my opinion it hurt his development, he never panned out.

Eller should be allowed to develop at his own pace, whatever that is and shouldn't make the team just to try to make Gauthier look good.

I agree, I think he should be on 3rd line to start anyway.

this we cannot put the label as #2 centre on the kid already, gotta have one of jokinen, marleau, plekanec in front of him.

im hoping marleau but if not we need to hold onto pleks. Assuming we cant bring in sharp or horton.

in order of preference

Marleau
Sharp
Plekanec
Horton
Lombardi
Jokinen

i have a feeling frolov is close to a lock. I see cammy asking to bring in his former teammate.

Most likely one of

frolov - Jokinen - cammalleri
frolov - Plekanec - cammalleri

And they traded him for a guy who tried to kill his own goalie

Signing Jokinen ahead of Plekanec would probably shut up all the people calling for a big center, because he would turn out to be a sizeable downgrade at not much of a discount.

Phaneuf and Jokinen both have something in common. They have a history of causing friction in the dressing room either directly or indirectly. Now, its interesting that Phaneuf has been given the captaincy role despite his reputation, but I think its easier for him to turn his reputation around because the leafs are still identifying their leaders, so its like a fresh start for Dion.

In Montreal, I think a strong leadership group has already developed, so I would be very cautious of allowing a guy like Jokinen into that locker room. If there was a common theme from montreal's summer last season, they brought in character with every free agent signing they made. There was little to no flakiness in Mara, Moen, Cammalleri, Gionta, and Spacek.

More likely that Moore is temporary poor man's number 2, with the hope that eventually Eller takes over.

Taking Hamrlik out and replacing him with Paul Martin, Hamhuis or Volchenkov would be ideal.
Here is my plan:

Since we seem to play without Markov half the time anyway, trade Markov, AK46, O'Byrne and Moen to Washington in exchange for Alzner, Laich and Fehr, on condition they take Hamrlik, too.

We then sign Volchenkov and Frolov, and re-sign both Pleks and Moore.

Pouliot-Gomez-Gionta
Cammalleri-Plekanec-Frolov
Laich-Eller-Fehr
Tom Pyatt-Moore-Lapierre

Spacek-Subban
Alzner-Volchenkov
Gill-Gorges

Price
Cheap backup

We still have room for three spares and over two million for deadline acquisitions.
