"Pat Quinn has stepped down as head coach to take an advisory role with the club"

So I guess he is staying with the Oilers.

Why go there in the 1st place?

The team was probably making the change but allowed Quinn to save face by stepping down

I don't think he 'stepped down' I think someone pulled out the step from underneath him.

Can't imagine Quinn took this very well. When I spoke to him in April about coaching future, he was surprised I'd even bring it up. 37 minutes ago via web

From TSN

Quote:
Pat Quinn is out as head coach of the Edmonton Oilers after a disastrous first season behind the bench. The club announced Tuesday that Quinn will move into a front-office role and associate coach Tom Renney will be bumped up to head coach.

Quinn has been moved into a senior adviser's job.

General manager Steve Tambellini says there had always been a succession plan that would see Renney take over for Quinn. But he admitted during a news conference Tuesday in Edmonton that the plan had been accelerated.

Plan was for Quinn to coach two years there, and then move upstairs. Sucks they pulled the rug out early, probably would have wanted to savour his last season.

LOL terrible move by the Oilers. Quinn is a great coach.

This year Hemsky only played 22 games and Souray only played 37 games while the highly paid Horcoff ($6.5 million) and Gilbert ($5.5 million) did not produce on a team that did not spend anywhere near the cap ceiling.

It's probably a good thing.

The game changed on him and he's not a good coach for this system. His health has been an issue too, so the less stress, the better for him.

He was referring to the actual money they made in salary last season.

If he was, he's still off. And with Darryl Katz as our owner, we don't need to worry about the actual salary, only the cap hit.

You'd think Pat deserved to be in the loop on this one. I don't know if it's a good move or a bad one but there's right ways to do things and then there's Edmontons way

I guess the process of getting a player like seguin or hall(*COUGH* HALL *COUGH*)accelerated that to make quinn a senior advisor, for the new group of players there, exciting time for the oilers.
