2010 NHL Draft Talk - Preds pick 18th overall

This was the first year Seth and I got to be a part of the HF Moderators Mock Draft. What really worked well for us was that both of us came in wanting the same thing, to tap one of the potiential forwards in the first round. I also took the additional responsibility of being Toronto's GM because apparently Torontonians don't want to do a hockey mock draft.....

We both came up with our binkies and they pretty much matched. As the draft went along things were going great, players we knew we had no chance of getting were going, defenseman were leaving the draft boards, and Russians were going by the way side. I honestly thought that we were looking at a buffet of awesome. I got out and worked the census and came back to the laptop and found disaster. Sadly the next thing I knew one by one, pick by pick, binkies were drafting left and right. With pick number 17 coming up and us at 18 there was only one left. Please note, this is a no trade draft and if the last binkie was gone SLake and I were looking at BPA DEFENSEMAN. Jonathan Merrill. If there was a chance to trade I would have PMed the Boston GM for their 2nd round this year and their 1st next year. I PMed SLake and said if the binkie is gone, I have to say BPA defenseman. Oy..... I could have the potential to sent out a message to the rest of the Mods saying **** y'all! But luckily, Colorado drafted off the ISS chart and got themselves a goalie. So without further adu, here is the pick....

Quinton Howden. LW 1/12/1992 L 6'2" 182 lbs Moose Jaw of the WHL

I was deeply pleased to say the least. Nashville needs a goal scoring wing. My hope was for a fast winger and the binkie that caught my eye was Skinner personally. I was hoping Skinner would drop but he was picked earlier.

Yeah, just a third round pick right now for Toronto. I'm co-GMing for the Preds with BFC and also serving as the GM for Carolina and have two second round picks I'm prepping for right now.

I knew as the picks were coming off that Howden was safe once we got past Dallas because Colorado was going with either Campbell or McIlrath due to the chatter on their board. Personally, I love the Howden pick. He is commonly compared to Todd Bertuzzi (ISS) and models his game after Patrick Marleau due to his great combo of speed, skill, and size. Will play on the wing as a pro. I just love his skill set and would be more than pleased to hear his named called at No. 18 from the podium in LA next month.

The mock is a 3 round draft so Burke will just have to kick Nonis out of the office for that one while he goes fishing.

Which is funny since Carolina is up RIGHT NOW! And there is a bunch of to 30 ISS talent left to pick for spot 32.

Actually, Carolina doesn't pick again until 37. Boston is up and has the pick from Toronto as part two of the Kessel deal. I like the talent left on the board, but still gotta wait awhile...

This is the ideal pick. Skinner is 5'10", Howden is 6'4", both have good wheels and play similar styles.

For your third round selection, I'd look into Brandon Archibald if he falls that far. He's big, moves pretty well, and has a lot of raw potential.

There's a lot of good forwards that should be available at 18, so I feel pretty decent about this draft. Now all that we have to do is pick the right one.

My preference, based on people I think could be there:

Emerson Etem
Quinton Howden
Austin Watson
Nick Bjugstad
Riley Sheahan
Tyler Toffoli
John McFarland

Etem and Howden are pretty high above the rest in my book, but it seems like Poile seems to love taking forwards from the NCAA, so I wouldn't be surprised with Bjugstad or Sheahan.

So, my pick: Emerson Etem
My guess as to who Poile will pick: Bjugstad

Can't see him passing on an american born, NCAA-bound Minnesota Mr. Hockey winner, who'll play next season with Budish on the Gophers.

I don't necessarily love that pick, but knowing Poile's draft tendencies, that's where I predict we go.

I could see Poile picking Etem over Bjustad. When I read the pedigree on Bjug he's a Budish clone. At first I thought that would be a good fit but after looking over the roster, the team is big enough, it's time for skill and scoring.

Well, I just came in here to post the link to the results of the HFBoards Moderator 2010 Mock Draft, but I see BFC has been updated the original post throughout the course of the past couple weeks...

Anyhow, here's a link to the thread to talk about the draft on the Mock Drafts board: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=783126

To review we selected F Quinton Howden with our first round pick and D Austin Madiasky in the third round. Poile traded our second round pick this season for Denis Grebeshkov at the trading deadline...

Yeah, I just got my first taste of South Carolina BBQ, let's see how NC is.

And it's sad the NP mods will spend more time in Carolina this week than in TN.

Well, at least I found out yesterday that I'll be back in Nashville in time for Summer Prospect Camp before having to leave again...July 6-11th for those of you wondering...

To get things back on topic...

If Etem and Howden are not there at #18 and no one really sexy slides to us, what are your thoughts on fielding offers to trade down and pickup maybe a late first and early/mid second round pick?

I would say that if there is nothing sexy trade the pick to possibly upgrade one of the forwards to a better top 6 player. Right now there are about 8 top 6 forwards with the Preds and O'Reilly really can't play in a spot where he can florish. The magic formula for the roster and cap would be trading two forwards for a forward who making a little less.

Part of me wonders what Colorado will offer for one of Nashville's many goal prospects? Or O'Reilly?

If they're gone and a decent offer comes along, I say go for it and grab Toffoli, McFarland or Sheahan

Looks like you guys are hoping for a forward as well. As a Sens fan I feel your pain. We are the two organizations along with Minny as the 3rd probably have the worst prospect forward talent in the league...

Let's hope both uor GM's change that this year!
