I would've tought that he'd return for one last kick at the tire. If he would've signed for one more year, he would've garanteed his brother another year at the same time IMO.
Oh well, he's not coming back so thanks for the memories and **** you for screwing us
Scott Neidermayer is a Devil, no matter how you slice it.
Thanks for everything, Neids.
And for the record, I am a supporter of his number being raised to the rafters. He did incredible things for this franchise, and is worthy of being next to Scott Stevens and Ken Daneyko.

Count me against retiring #27 at least for now. He bolted as soon as he could and never looked back. Maybe if he came back to the organization in some capacity I would change my mind.
Probably the next time we see Niedermayer in New Jersey will be to raise his No. 27 Devils jersey into the rafters at the Prudential Center.
"He is certainly deserving every consideration," Lamoriello said when asked about retiring that number.
Personally, I don't see a reason not to retire his number...
Neidermayer's career with New Jersey:
13 seasons
112 G
476 P
+172
On all three Cup teams
3x All Star
2004 Norris Trophy
Now, let's compare just statistics (emphasis: just statistics) to Stevens with NJD:
13 seasons
93 G
430 P
+282
On all three Cup teams
10x All Star
2000 Conn Smythe
When it comes to the simple math of the game, Neidermayer is better in some regards, and Stevens is better in some regards. (NO! I AM NOT trying to compare Stevens and Neidermayer! And I repeat myself because I don't want to be the subject of much scorn. And I do think Stevens is God and kills Neidermayer.)
I think it's just anger over the fact that Neidermayer didn't stay here that some don't want his number retired, because there probably wouldn't be a question over the matter of having Number 27 fly next to 4 and 3 if Neids spent his post-lockout years here...

Raise 27, Lou!
It's not that he "didn't stay here". That doesn't tell the whole story.
I really don't see where he did anything wrong. It's a business. Did he get browbeaten by his mom? Sure, but it's his right to leave and we were unfortunate that the lockout sped the process along.
Not that I really wanted to see him play here again, or anything like that....
No doubt he was a great player on the Devils as part of the HoF triumvirate on the Cup teams. I just think number retirements should be reserved for players that, you know, actually want to be Devils.

you're counting those first 4 games as a season?
12 seasons really. 12 with NJ; 5 with ANA
Leaving right on the heels of Stevens retiring even after Lou offered him the juiciest contract possible still bitters the deal to me. Make him wait until after 30 and 26 are up.

It's a business, not personal. I don't understand the bitterness.
**** that. If you choose to leave the Devils for another organization, your number should not be retired. Plain and simple. I don't see his number being retired, and it shouldn't. Loyalty to an organization should be a huge part of getting your number retired. He can have all the paintings of himself in the Rock he wants, but he should not have his number retired.
Dano was loyal. Scotty Stevens was loyal. Marty and Patty have shown their loyalty. Sarge as well. Neids? Go hang your jersey on a palm tree outside Disney Land.

you don't win Cups without Niedermayer. Loyalty be damned, he played the majority of his career in NJ anyway. Players leave, it happens.
I'm a 31 year old man, and I'm not ashamed to admit, I got a little teary eyed when I heard he was announcing his retirement.
Scott Niedermayer has been my favorite player (not just Devil, but player) since 1993. Before 1993, I only had a white home Devils Red/Green. In 1993, I bought my first name & number Devils jersey. Scott Niedermayer, #27.
I still wear it to games from time to time.

The only Canadian Six Champion. (World Juniors, Olympic Gold [2], World Cup, IIHF Worlds, Memorial Cup, Stanley Cup [4]).

Does Albany have a coach yet?
I have to admit, I'm totally not aware of any "bad blood". I was fine with his leaving, because he flat out said he wanted to play with his brother. Being that I'm a firm believer in family, I totally understood that position, and I never thought ill of him for that desire.
Maybe something else went on behind the scenes that I'm not aware of?
